          Jeihan Sukmantoro (b. 1938 - 2019) Ni Kadek, 1972

          Est: RM4,000 - RM7,000

Throughout his career, the renowned Indonesian expressionist painter Jeihan Sukmantoro sought to illustrate the captivating aura of women onto his canvases. Executed in contrasts of deep blue shades and white, the dancer's expressive gaze is soft yet captivating. Her almond shaped eyes are well defined, seeking to convey her inner emotions. In these works, Jeihan successfully emulates the personality of the sitter onto his creations, often presenting the modern woman as an independent and confident individual. Art-writer Ooi Kok Chuen dubbed Jeihan a "soul catcher" and in his interview with Jeihan at his (Jeihan's) three-and-a-half-storey studio in Kota Bandung, Jeihan explained the ‘Black Eyes': "We are all walking and working in darkness and mystery. We don't know where we are going, what will happen tomorrow." (The Star, Oct 23, 2011). The multidisciplinary Jeihan Sukmantoro was a sculptor, ceramist, printmaker (woodcuts) and painter (acrylic, oil, watercolours, pastels) and a published poet. A rebel, he studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology (1960-1966) but did not complete it. His best known book of poetry is MATA MBeling Jeihan (2000). Besides all over Indonesia, he had solo exhibitions in Rome (Italy), Rotterdam (Netherlands), New Jersey (United States), Paris (France), Zurich (Switzerland) and Malaysia. For his dedication in the art world, Jeihan achieved an award as the Pioneer of West Java Art (2006) and Anugerah Budaya Kota Bandung (2009).

Sore Di Pelabuhan Ratu presents a fishing town located in West Java province renowned for its sandy beaches. Executed in muted and rustic colours, it depicts a picturesque landscape of boats along the peaceful coastline in the evening. The area derived its name based on the legendary myth of the Queen of the Southern Sea. The multidisciplinary Jeihan Sukmantoro was a sculptor, ceramist, printmaker (woodcuts) and painter (acrylic, oil, watercolours, pastels) and a published poet. Jeihan Sukmantoro (b. 1938 - 2019) Parti, 2011

          Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

Jeihan Sukmantoro is dubbed "soul-catcher" by art-writer Ooi Kok Chuen (interview in Bandung, published in The Sunday Star, Oct 23, 2011) for his prescience in capturing the intrinsic qualities and enigmatic aura of the portraited, just by using black blobs or slits for the eyes. The black eyes device was first used in his 1965 work, Gadis, and was described by Ooi as a "black hole of emotional DNA". In the interview, he told Ooi: "We are all walking and working in darkness and mystery. We don't know where we are going, what will happen tomorrow." Eyes are deemed the windows to one's soul. As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, in his Theory Of Colour, wrote: "The eye has to thank light for its existence." Here, Jeihan highlights the ivory skin of a lady, dressed in a bright, lemon coloured dress. Her dark, almond shaped eyes were accentuated with the colour black, which adds to the mystery of the sitter with a strong persona. The multidisciplinary Jeihan Sukmantoro was a sculptor, ceramist, printmaker (woodcuts) and painter (acrylic, watercolours, pastels) and a published poet. A rebel, he studied at the Bandung Institute of Technology (1960-1966) but did not complete. His best known book of poetry is MATA MBeling Jeihan (2000). Besides in all over Indonesia, he had solo exhibitions in Rome (Italy), Rotterdam (Netherlands), New Jersey (United States), Paris (France), Zurich (Switzerland) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).

Jeihan Sukmantoro, who recently passed away, was born in 1938 near Solo (Central Java). At the age of six, he had an accident that left him with brain damage and epilepsy. Despite the incident, Jeihan completed junior high school and focused on art in senior high school where he received a class promotion for conducting a solo exhibition of 30 watercolours. Women were the artist’s preferred subject of choice, seeing a uniqueness in them, exuding mystery and character. This particular piece entitled, Mariam uses cool toned hues with the medium of oil on canvas. She was painted against a vibrant space, focusing on the physical and non- physical reality of things. Jeihan regarded his subjects, like Mariam, as spiritual beings and draw indirect attention to her through facial expressions and body gestures.

At the tender age of six, an accident left Jeihan with brain damage and epilepsy. He was believed to be dead, but he awakened before he was buried. This experience was believed to play a significant role in his paintings. Internationally sought after for his tasteful figurative portraits, the hallmark of Jeihan’s artworks is his subject’s blank eyes. Dramatic and striking, the effect can be unsettling but the peculiarity and air of mystery surrounding it draws viewers in. Perhaps this is the artist’s commentary on not conforming to society’s standards. While there’s a saying that the eyes are the gateway to the soul, there is plenty of soul to be found in his work despite the absence of his subject’s eyes, as in this painting.

The sitter is painted in the usual style of the artist which consists of a pair of black eyes with pale skin posed a little slanted to the left as the lips seem slightly parted. Her effortless beauty is further enhanced by the wavy hair that she possesses. An elegant beauty! Throughout his career, the renowned Indonesian expressionist painter Jeihan Sukmantoro sought to illustrate the captivating aura of women onto his canvases. On offer here are portraits of two women in frontal pose, rendered in bold colours. In these works, Jeihan successfully emulates the personality of the sitter onto his creations, often presenting the modern woman as an independent and confident individual. Art-writer Ooi Kok Chuen dubbed Jeihan a “soul catcher” and in his interview with Jeihan in his (Jeihan’s) three-and-a-half-storey studio in Kota Bandung, Jeihan explained the ‘Black Eyes’: “We are all walking and working in darkness and mystery. We don’t know where we are going, what will happen tomorrow." (The Star, Oct 23, 2011). The multidisciplinary Jeihan Sukmantoro was a sculptor, ceramist, printmaker (woodcuts) and painter (acrylic, oil, watercolours, pastels) and a published poet.
