Signed SUGIURA, KAZUTOSHI Editioned Silkscreen Print, 1996

    Est: $100 - $1,000

Signed SUGIURA, KAZUTOSHI Edition Silkscreen Print, 1996 Pencil Sighed K. Sugiura Numbered 9/65. Kazutoshi Sugiura is a contemporary printmaker who has created his own distinct, layered style of silkscreen printing. His work focuses on flowers, in particular the iris and peony. Sugiura was born in Kyoto and attended Kyoto College of Fine Arts. Showing exceptional talent as a student, he was commissioned by the International Graphic Art Society in New York to do an edition of silkscreen prints. After graduating in 1963, he spent four years studying classical Japanese painting and the art of gold leaf restoration at Kyoto National Museum of Antiquities. The use of gold leaf and rich saturated colors has become the hallmark of his prints and brings to mind the art of Japanese screen painting. He applies the gold leaf to the paper prior to the silkscreen process. This gives his works a textured, three dimensional quality that adds to his dramatic, yet intimate, compositions. His designs have an immediate appeal and are timeless, elegant and serene.

  • Signed K. Sugiura silkscreen in a Kato frame
    Sep. 29, 2023

Signed K. Sugiura silkscreen in a Kato frame

    Est: $200 - $2,000

Sugiura, Kazutoshi, Iris, #136, 1998, silkscreen printed on aground of gold leaf, pencil signed and numbered 59/60, in a Kato frame. Estate of Regina Doi. Regina Doi started collecting the Mori's from the late 60's through the 90's. Mori was no as well known but he became famous during the 80's and by the 90's, his works were hard to come by. All the Mori's came from Kato Gallery, who also framed them. Kato and Mori were friends and thus the gallery had first pickings of his works. Regina Doi loved Mori and she may have been his largest collector at one time. The other prints, namely the antique Hiroshige, Utamaro, etc. were most likely bought from the Oriental Bazaar. This was like a mall of vendors which sold Japanese goods. It had 4 floors of vendors, the first 2 floors were mainly junk but on the 3rd and 4th, they had oriental rugs, prints, jewelry and antiques. Good prints and antiques were a lot more available during the 60's & 70's. By the 80's onward things were getting more scarce and harder to find. Tokyo was a magnet for these things, it had the population and wealth and so many ended up there.

Lifetime collection of Carol and Robert (Rob) Kane, Oxford, OH.  Carol and Robert (Rob) Kane were residents of Oxford, Ohio since 1962. Rob taught Classics at Miami University (Ohio) for 37 years and volunteered at the Saint Francis Seraph Soup Kitchen in Cincinnati for 13 years after his retirement. Carol was active for over three decades as a docent at Miami University Art Museum and a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization, which helps women achieve their educational goals through scholarships and grants. Married 51 years, the couple raised two sons who survive them, John and Ned, both of California. Carol and Rob traveled widely in North and South America, Asia, and Europe. They shared a lifelong passion for art, and museums and galleries were at the top of their agenda when traveling. Over the decades, they collected art both close to home and during their travels. A special example is a two month tour of Japan and China in 1985, when tourism in China was just starting to reopen. They took along their young sons and, with input from Asian art historians friends touring with them, collected numerous paintings and ceramics. Many of those items, along with others collected in the US and around the world, are included in this sale. Others were inherited by Carol and Rob from their parents, especially Rob’s mother Mary Geraldine Kane of New York City, who collected in the US, Ireland, and the UK. Carol was born in Grosse Pointe, MI, attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart and Manhattanville College, and earned a masters degree in European history from Georgetown University.  Rob was from New York City, attended the College of the Holy Cross, and earned a PhD from Princeton University.
