        Large Carl Sublett (Tennessee, 1919-2008) abstract expressionist watercolor on paper depicting a sailing vessel, rendered in colors of red, blue, and gold on a white ground. Signed lower right. Float mounted on white board and housed in a gilt and ebonized wood frame. Watercolor: 30" H x 40" W. Framed: 38 1/4" H x 47 3/4" W. Note: This painting was part of the 1991 "The Unseen Carl Sublett" exhibition at the Knoxville Museum of Art. Biography: Carl Sublett studied Art History at the American Academy in Florence, Italy, after serving as a sergeant in World War II. He moved to Knoxville in 1954 where he studied with Kermit Ewing and eventually became a Professor of Fine Art at the University of Tennessee. Sublett was a founding member of the art group, "The Knoxville Seven," a progressive group working from 1955-1965, which produced some of the first abstract expressionist art in Tennessee. In 1982 he retired from teaching, and, in 1984, he opened the Sublett Gallery in Knoxville. In 1991, "The Unseen Carl Sublett" was the first exhibit at the new Knoxville Museum of Art (built on the site of the 1982 World's Fair). Sublett won numerous awards for his paintings and was a member of the National Academy of Design.         Group of three (3) Carl Sublett (Tennessee, 1919-2008) architectural watercolor paintings on paper depicting three historic Knoxville houses, all rendered in sepia tones, titled, signed, and dated '64. One depicts a home on Clinch Avenue SW, one depicts a rear view of the Colonel James Van Deventer House and the other depicts a House on Circle Park. All housed in matching wood and gilt frames with white mattes. Clinch Avenue painting measures: Sight: 15 1/2" "H x13 " W. Framed: 23 1/2" H x 20 1/2" W. The other paintings measure: Sight: 13 1/4" H x 15 3/4" W. Framed: 21 1/4" H x 23 1/2" W. Note: After 1908, the Colonel James Van Deventer house was used by The University of Tennessee as its Faculty Club, and was razed in the 1980's to allow for the construction of Hodges Library. The houses on Circle Park were razed in the mid-1960's to allow for the expansion of the University of TN campus. The "tower" house is still standing on Clinch Avenue.

Biography: Carl Sublett studied Art History at the American Academy in Florence, Italy after World War II, and became Professor of Fine Art at the University of Tennessee. Sublett was a member of the National Academy of Design. His works are in the collections of the National Academy of Design, The Tennessee State Museum, and Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville.

        Carl Sublett (Tennessee, 1919-2008) watercolor painting on paper titled "Southern Icon #293", depicting the Southern Railway Terminal located in downtown Knoxville, TN. Dated and signed lower right "93 Sublett". Title, signature, and inscriptions describing the work in pencil en verso. "Unframed. 21 78" H x 30 1/4" W. Note: Original paperwork from artist included with this painting. Biography: Carl Sublett studied Art History at the American Academy in Florence, Italy, after serving as a sergeant in World War II. He moved to Knoxville in 1954 where he studied with Kermit Ewing and eventually became a Professor of Fine Art at the University of Tennessee. Sublett was a founding member of the art group, The Knoxville Seven, a progressive group working from 1955-1965, which produced some of the first abstract expressionist art in Tennessee. In 1982 he retired from teaching and in 1984, he opened the Sublett Gallery in Knoxville. In 1991, "The Unseen Carl Sublett" was the first exhibit at the new Knoxville Museum of Art (built on the site of the 1982 World's Fair). Sublett won numerous awards for his paintings and was a member of the National Academy of Design. His works are in the collections of the National Academy of Design, The Tennessee State Museum, and Cheekwood, Nashville. (Source: The Tennessee Arts Commission).
