      Chris Sturgess-Lief,  British 1937-2011 -  Shuderscape with Arena, c.1960-62;  pastel on paper, signed lower left 'Sturgess-Lief', 26.1 x 38.8 cm: together with another signed work by the same artist with the same medium, 'Agamemnon Last Bath', 33.1 x 26.3 cm (2) (unframed) (ARR)  Provenance:  with Gallery One, London;  Monica Kinley (the widow of Victor Musgrave, the director of Gallery One, and champion of Outsider Art);  private collection, purchased from the above  Note:  the fantastical imagery and use of historical symbols in the artist's work are highly reminiscent of his contemporaries Alan Davie and Martin Bradley. He exhibited in important galleries in the 1960s such as Victor Musgrave's Gallery One and the New Visions Gallery ran by Denis Bowen.

      *Christopher Sturgess-Lief (1937-2011)'VISION OF AKNATON'Signed l.r., dated 1961 and titled on Gallery One label verso, oil and mixed media on board80 x 81cmRaised in Dorset, Christopher Sturgess-Lief started showing his work on the Hyde Park railings in London in the early 1960s. There he was spotted by Victor Musgrave of Gallery One, who gave him a solo show in 1962. Sturgess-Lief went on to exhibit at Rye Art Gallery in 1969 and in mixed shows at New Vision Centre, Leicester Galleries, Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol in 1963 and also in Japan and the United States. His Red Painting was included in the Belgrave Gallery's 1992 show 'British Abstract Art of the 1950s and 60s', and Julian Hartnoll in St James's put on a solo exhibition of his work in 1997. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
