    L. MEYER (19th) after STÜRMER (*1803), Mr Jacob Paul von Gundling, Copper engraving

    Est: €300 - €400

Ludwig Meyer (19th century) after Karl Stürmer (1803 - 1881 ): Portrait of Jacob Paul von Gundling (1673 Hersbruck - 1731 Potsdam), German historian, court scholar and involuntary court jester of Frederick William I, hip piece looking frontally at the viewer, pouring himself wine, 19th century, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: Inscribed below the print with the sitter's name, signed below left and right. The print is inscribed below with the sitter's name and comes from the Rosenthal Collection - Munich/Hilversum grotesque and inhuman funeral in a wine barrel. Date: 19th century Description: A tragic fate befell the court scholar Gundling. The soldier-king Frederick William I had a penchant for crude mockery, which Gundling suffered because of his vanity and drunkenness. He demoted the professor to court jester and is said to have locked him in a room with bears, dressed him up as a monkey or thrown him into the castle moat. Apparently due to the continued humiliation, he developed stomach ulcers and suffered an early death. At the king's instigation, his body was displayed and buried in a grotesque and inhuman manner - the coffin resembled a wine barrel. Keywords: 19th century, Baroque, Portraits, Germany, Size: Paper: 12,2 cm x 8,5 cm (4,8 x 3,3 in), Depiction: 9,3 cm x 6,4 cm (3,7 x 2,5 in)
