The present composition by Camille Stuchlik depicts a still life in muted colors. The artist presents a geranium plant with dark red flowers in a black cachepot on a table in front of a gray background. On the left, the leaves of a second plant can be seen. A couple of wilted petals have already fallen onto the table top. The composition, which is defined by a contemplative, almost melancholic mood, nonetheless captivates the viewer with skilfully set contrasts. The painting is in good condition. There is craquelure and some drying crackle, mainly to the background. There is a tiny tear on the right and three tiny tears above the lower edge, which are backed with canvas. The work is signed and dated ‘Camill Stuchlik 1907’ upper right. The frame shows minor losses at the corners. The framed work measures 93.5 x 52 cm, the stretcher frame measures 85 x 44 cm. Camill Stuchlik (1863-1940) Camill Stuchlik was born in the Czech city of Decin on the river Elbe. He studied at the Academy in Prague and was a pupil of the German painter Ludwig von Löfftz in Munich. Stuchlik created primarily figurative compositions, portraits and press drawings. A comprehensive exhibition with works by the artist was held in Prague in 1933. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
