William Pierce Stubbs (1842–1909) or W.P. Stubbs was a marine painter in the Boston, Massachusetts, area in the 19th century. Examples of his work are in the Bostonian Society; Cape Ann Museum; and Peabody Essex Museum. He also lived in Bucksport, Maine.

Comes with family photograph of consignors great great grandparents with the painting hanging in their home (circe 1905). Condition: could use a light cleaning Sight Size: 14 x 20 in. Overall Framed Size: 17.25 x 23.25 in. William Pierce Stubbs was born in Orrington, Maine, in 1842. He was the son of a shipmaster, and he was probably master of his father's ship from 1863-73. By 1871 he painted what is likely his first ship portrait, and by 1876 he was listed as a marine painter in the Boston city directory. While there, Stubbs shared a studio with Wesley Webber. Later, he had studios in Boston, and Charlestown where it is likely that Badger was his student. Stubbs participated in the International Marine Exhibition of 1889, in Boston. His paintings are held in the collections at the Mariner's Museum, the Mystic Seaport Museum, the Beverly Historical Society, the Philadelphia Marine Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution.

He was committed in 1894 to Worcester State Hospital, and then to the Medfield State Hospital in 1899. He later died there, in 1909. Stubbs also participated in the International Marine Exhibition.

        Oil painting on canvas by William Stubs (American 1842-1909), untitled. This is a dark painting taking place at night on the ocean. A light house sits on the shore and waves from a storm crash into the shore. The light house is tall and white house sits at the base. A ship sails dangerously close to the shore on the right side. Dark clouds fill the sky with a small piece of blue sky visible at the top. Signed on lower left. Good overall condition, some darkening of varnish, not examined out of frame. Gold painted period frame, framed measurements are 34.75" x 24.75" and canvas measurements are 20" x 30".

        ship Glide, second half of the 19th c. A seascape oil painting on canvas depicting the ship under full sail entering Rockport harbor. Signed lower left Stubbs. In the background is the Cape Ann Light Station. Sight size 22" x 36", overall 25 1/2" x 40". In a modern gilded frame. Shows four old repairs on the verso; inpainting and repaired areas in the sky and water under UV light. The Glide of Salem, MA was owned by Captain John Bertram, and used in the trade with Zanzibar in the 1860s. It was wrecked entering Tamatave off the east coast of Africa in 1885.
