George Stubbs The Complete Engraved Works, no 105, state 2. Not in Mellon collection. Uncommon in this early state. Pumpkin was foaled in 1769 and won sixteen of twenty-four races, all at Newmarket which is the setting for this composition. His owners included Thomas Foley and Charles James Fox.
