George (1724) Stubbs Sold at Auction Prices

Sport painter, Painter, Animal painter, Porträtmaler, Etcher, b. 1724 - d. 1806

Born in England in 1724, artist George Stubbs was self-taught, and parleyed his avid interest in anatomy and musculature into tremendously accurate representations of people and animals, especially horses. His reputation was secured at an early age when he illustrated Anatomy of the Horse, which led to his continued employment and remained his main specialty throughout his life. George Stubbs' paintings have a naturalistic and detailed style that instantly evokes the pastoral English countryside with all its wildlife and gentry.

Over time, George Stubbs' paintings, rendered in his meticulous style, made him one of the nation's most renowned painters of horses. He was commissioned by aristocracy throughout Britain, securing his place in history and earning enough to live comfortably in London until his death in 1806. Stubbs' horse prints, along with other domestic animal and wildlife oil paintings, are for sale online and at auction.

George Stubbs (1724-1806) was an English painter known for his remarkable depictions of horses, as well as other animals, sporting scenes, and portraits. He is considered one of the finest equestrian artists in the history of Western art. Here are some key points about George Stubbs and his contributions to art:1. **Early Life and Background**: George Stubbs was born in Liverpool, England. He was largely self-taught as an artist, with little formal training. He initially worked as a portrait painter and later developed a passion for anatomy and the study of horses.2. **Scientific Approach**: Stubbs was not only an artist but also a keen anatomist. He conducted in-depth studies of horse anatomy, which included dissections and careful observations of the skeletal and mcular structures of horses. His scientific approach to art made his horse paintings highly accurate and detailed.3. **Equestrian Art**: George Stubbs is best known for his equestrian art, particularly his horse portraits. His paintings of horses are characterized by their meticulo attention to anatomical detail and a keen understanding of the equine form. His ability to capture the majesty and grace of horses made him a sought-after artist in this genre.4. **"Whistlejacket"**: One of Stubbs' most famo works is "Whistlejacket," a life-sized portrait of a racehorse owned by the Marquess of Rockingham. The painting is known for its dramatic and dynamic portrayal of the horse in mid-gallop.5. **Portraits and Sporting Scenes**: In addition to horse portraits, Stubbs also painted portraits of racehorses and their owners. He frequently depicted sporting scenes, including hunting, shooting, and racing, often with great attention to the details of clothing, animals, and landscapes.6. **Recognition**: Stubbs gained recognition and patronage from British aristocrats and nobility who were passionate about horses and hunting. His artistic prowess and anatomical expertise earned him a respected place in the art world.7. **Later Career**: Later in his career, Stubbs expanded his subject matter to include other animals, such as dogs, lions, and exotic animals like kangaroos and zebras, which he painted from anatomical studies and from descriptions provided by travelers.8. **Legacy**: George Stubbs' contributions to equestrian art and his meticulo anatomical studies of horses have left a lasting legacy. His work continues to be admired by art enthiasts and is a valuable resource for those interested in the anatomy of animals.9. **Literary Contributions**: Stubbs also authored a book titled "The Anatomy of the Horse," which was published in 1766. The book, accompanied by detailed engravings, remains an important reference in the field of equine anatomy.George Stubbs' mastery of horse painting and his scientific approach to art made him a unique and influential figure in the world of 18th-century British art. His paintings are celebrated for their precision, accuracy, and the beauty they bring to the world of equestrian art. Measures 20 x 24. Oil on canvas. Sold "after" Stubbs.

A very good, early impression with strong contrasts and little to no sign of wear. We have found only one other lifetime impression like the current work at auction in the past 30 years. Lennox-Boyd 60. Although Stubbs (1724-1806) is most well-known for his paintings of horses and portraiture, he was also an accomplished printmaker. According to Richard Godfrey, in his essay George Stubbs as a Printmaker published in Fearful Symmetry: George Stubbs, Stubbs taught himself etching early in his career, illustrating John Burton's An Essay Towards a Complete New System of Midwifery (1751) and his own The Anatomy of a Horse (1766). He realized that printmaking could be lucrative and raise his profile as an artist. Later, while Stubbs had not exhibited a painting from 1782 to 1786, he was occupied by twelve plates which reinterpreted scenes or details of his earlier paintings, which were ultimately published in May 1788. After experimenting in the techniques of stipple, aquatint, and soft-ground etching, all of which were introduced to British printmakers in the 1760s and 1770s, Stubbs' printed works became remarkable in their gentle tonality and meticulous anatomical details present in his painted ouevre. The demand for Stubbs' printed works during the artist's lifetime were such that only a few impressions were printed, contributing to the scarcity of his prints found on the market today. Although the subjects of Tygers at Play are leopards, and Stubbs would have been familiar with the distinctions between the species, historian Leslie Parris, in George Stubbs A.R.A. 'Leopards at Play' and 'The Spanish Pointer', concluded, "An explanation of Stubbs' indiscriminate use of the word 'tyger', which he seems to have employed in some generic sense, is still needed." Other scholars posit that the word "tiger" was commonly used as late as 1785 as a blanket term for large cats classified under the genus Felis tigris.

Graves, Stubbs' Dogs, London 1984, p. 85, cat. no. 9, reproduced fig. 55Dog portraiture began in France at the court of Louis XIV, who commissioned portraits of his favourite hounds from Jean-Baptiste Oudry. In England, where the emphasis in hunting was increasingly being placed upon the performance of individual hounds, this was reflected in the paintings of contemporaries John Wootton and Peter Tillemans, the former of whom in particular started to produce portraits of dogs in the mid eighteenth century.Though dogs, particularly hounds, had featured in Stubbs's work since the mid-1760, and his skill for rendering the distinctive features of individual hounds in paint had been demonstrated in his paintings of The Charlton Hunt and The Grosvenor Hunt, it was not until the mid-1770s that portraits of single dogs begin to feature with any regularity within his repertoire. A fine example of this new emphasis in Stubbs's work can be seen in the series of seven pictures he painted for John Musters of Colwick Hall, Nottinghamshire, circa 1777. Among this groups are two portraits of Mrs Musters spaniels, both of which are lovingly commissioned portraits of adored family pets. Of all breeds spaniels were those that Stubbs painted most frequently, they appear in no less than ten portraits and twice as part of the composition in the portrait of a horse. The King Charles spaniel in particular - one of many breeds favoured by King Charles II - had been kept as a pet of the rich for many years.

          Est: $600 - $900

circle of GEORGE STUBBS (English 1724-1806) A CONVERSATION PAINTING, "Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl of Dundonald with his Sons, Wife and Horses," CIRCA 1755, oil on canvas, verso an old paper label identifying sitter. 8 1/2" x 29 1/4" Note: The Earl is seated with another nobleman at far right. Servants and locals mingle in the countryside attending casually to the aristocratic family. The Earl's second wife, Jane Stuart, dressed in yellow is perhaps having her palm read by a fortune-teller, while her nursemaid pulls her arm back. Country folk sit with infants and an old man is seated by the horses. An unusual landscape scene that fits into the British conversation tradition, but also excitingly includes portraits of two very fine horses, varying from formal portraits of the same period slightly. One horse is shown from the rear with a rider that appears to riding sidesaddle and wearing a cropped red riding habit. The sex of the rider arguable for the mystery seems intentional. The 8th Earl had one daughter who died unmarried. The brown horse is awaiting a saddle held by a female groom. The viewer should note the sandy and rocky landscape, the lack of leafy trees is curious for the period and distinctly consistent with George Stubbs oeuvre. George Stubbs, best known for his horse and animal paintings, also painted portraits of noble families. A self-taught artist, his works have a distinct minimalistic background and landscapes are somewhat abstracted when compared to his contemporaries, examples of which can be seen here in the present work. Interpreting the work of art is complex as social norms of 18th century aristocracy would have seen this commingling as taboo.
