Imogen Stuart (b.1927) Madonna and Child (1987)

        Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Imogen Stuart (b.1927) Madonna and Child (1987) bronze on stone base - artist's proof signed and dated ' IMOGEN 1987' h:56  w:16.50 d:14.50 cm. Provenance: Jonathan Swift Gallery where purchased by the present owner A sculpture that evokes art of the Romanesque period, Madonna and Child is simple and elegant in conception. Essentially it is in the shape of a bronze cylinder, within which is recessed a relief image of the Madonna and child. The forms are robust and direct, with the small figure of the Christ child, arms outstretched, held in the protective hands of the Madonna. Although she has lived for many years in Ireland, sculptor Imogen Stuart was born in Berlin in 1927, into an artistic family. Her father, Bruno Werner, was a art critic and writer, as was her mother Katharina. Her training as a sculptor began in Bavaria after the Second World War. When sculptor Otto Hitzberger, professor of sculpture at the National Academy, had been labelled as a 'degenerate' artist by the Nazis, Bruno Werner had assisted him. Trained at Obergammau, Hitzberger was a devout religious artist, and after the war, he took on Bruno's daughter Imogen as an apprentice. She assisted initially in carving grave markers, but quickly discovered Romanesque art, and the work of Rodin, Maillol and Barlach. Later she studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. She met Ian Stuart, son of the novelist Francis Stuart, when, through the intercession of Bruno, he came in 1948 to study sculpture in Munich. Imogen first visited Ireland in 1949, exhibiting a relief sculpture St. Brendan Discovering America at the RHA. She and Ian Stuart married in 1951, and had three daughters, before divorcing two decades later. Over the decades following Imogen has continued the Bavarian tradition of religious sculpture, with much of her work in Ireland commissioned by the Catholic church. Such works include a Stations of the Cross at Ballintubber Abbey in Co. Mayo, altar furniture for the Honan Chapel at UCC and a monument to Pope John Paul II at Maynooth College. She continues today to work as a sculptor, in stone, glass, wood and bronze. There is a collection of her sculptures at the University of Limerick, and a retrospective exhibition was held at the RHA in 2002. Stuart was elected a Saoi of Aosdána in 2015. OLIVER PLUNKETT, 1975 Medium: bronze; (both double-sided) Signature: each signed [Imogen] within the design at base of cross; hallmarked [COF Italy] near the feet; both inscribed Dimensions: 8 cm., 3.25 in. high Provenance: Monsignor Peter Shields, Administrator in the Archdiocese of Armagh (1975); Thence by descent Exhibited: Literature: Literature:: Fallon, Brian, Imogen Stuart Sculptor, Four Courts Press, Dublin, 2002, p.147, catalogue no. 117 (listed) Notes: Diameter of second medal 2ins. Inscription obverse reads, "Oliverius Archiep Arma Chan Martyr"; reverse read, "Sanctus 12.X.1975" and "Tyburn I.VII.1681". Saint Oliver Plunkett (1629-1681) was ordained in 1654 and spent the years of the Irish Confederate Wars and Cromwellian conquest of Ireland (1649-1653) in Rome. On his return to Ireland in 1670 he set up several schools to further the development of Catholicism in Ireland. He was later prosecuted for these actions and was arrested in 1679. Two years later he was found guilty of high treason "for promoting Catholic faith" and was hung drawn and quartered in Tyburn on 1 July 1681. This design was also used for 'Canonisation of Oliver Plunkett' commemorative [7p and 15p] stamps issued on 13 October 1975. Both medal and stamps were commissioned by Cardinal Conway. MONUMENT TO LOVE height 60.5cm.; 23¾in. signed, inscribed, dated 97 and numbered 1/6 bronze with a light brown patina LITERATURE Brian Fallon, Imogen Stuart, Sculptor, Dublin 2002, illustrated p.108 (teak version). NOTE Monument to Love is inscribed with lines from letter seven of Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet (May 14 1904), '...Love consists in this that two solitudes protect and touch and greet each other...'. A large scale monumental version of the present work was recently commissioned for the Centre of Irish Studies in Paris and unveiled to great acclaim in 2006. Born in Berlin, Stuart moved to Ireland in 1951 where she has lived and worked ever since. She studied with Otto Hitzberger who importantly taught her the art of wood carving that she developed to become one of the key characteristics of her own style. Stuart has received numerous important public commissions including Pangur Bán (1976, University College, Dublin), Stations of the Cross (1981-81, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Firhouse, Dublin), Monument to Pope John Paul II (1986, Maynooth College), The Arch of Peace (1989, Market Square, Cavan) and Madonna (1991, Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin).
