Gilbert Stuart Sold at Auction Prices

Portrait painter, Miniature painter, b. 1755 - d. 1828

Artist Gilbert Stuart, who was born in 1755, was America's most celebrated, most talented portraitist. The best-known Gilbert Stuart painting is his unfinished portrait of George Washington, known as the Athenaeum, which he started in 1796, but was still incomplete when he died. In between, Stuart was busy reproducing that portrait and completing his oeuvre of more than 1,000 portraits of celebrated Americans, including the first six U.S. presidents.

Artist Gilbert Stuart had an easy manner with his subjects, and although slow in his work, was commissioned again and again because he recreated exacting, natural likenesses that pleased the eye of his patrons. He used bold, florid, bravura brushstrokes in oil, lending an illustrious appearance to Gilbert Stuart's portrait subjects. Provenance: From the Collection of Salem Academy and College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Brunk Auctions, May 18, 2019, sold for $14,400; Private Collection Literature:  Rudge, William Edwin. Gilbert Stuart, an Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works Compiled by Lawrence Park [New York]: [W.E. Rudge], 1926.,  ill. page 370, vol. IV, #608.; discussed page 570, vol. II.   In the Rudge edition, #608 is described in depth, and illustrated (see above).  The painting discussed there is oil on panel. The portrait shown here, nearly identical in every way to the Parkman portrait illustrated on page 608, is oil on canvas, and there are very slight differences in the treatment of the white neckcloth.  At the end of the entry on page 570, the author notes that "a copy is owned by Mrs. James Means". This painting is quite possibly the copy once owned my Mrs. Means. In addition, Rudge notes that  Stuart painted Mr. Parkman again, later in life (#609, p. 571, not illustrated), but that this one was "...very inferior to the first portrait". At the age of 55, Mr. Parkman commissioned Gilbert Stuart to paint a full length portrait of George Washington, the "Washington at Dorchester Heights" that is now in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

This portrait is listed as a replica owned by Mrs. Morris Gray, the sitter's great granddaughter. Notes: Gilbert Stuart painted his pair of portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Mason in Washington, D.C. where Jonathan Mason was serving as U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. During this period, Stuart also painted portraits of the Mason's daughters, Anna Powell Mason and Miriam Clark Mason, as well as this replica of his portrait of Susannah and a similar smaller version, now in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums. Jonathan Mason persuaded Stuart to move to Boston in 1805, assuring the artist he would have a plentiful clientele in the city. The Mason's patronage of Stuart continued, including portraits of their third daughter, Susan Powell Mason, along with sons-in-law, David Sears and Dr. John Collins Warren. Jonathan Mason also owned one of Gilbert Stuart's "Athenaeum" portraits of George Washington painted circa 1820 and now in the collection of the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. 133 Marlborough St. in Boston's Back Bay was purchased by Mrs. Morris Gray in 1912 and remained in the family until 1935. Her daughter, Elizabeth, married Courtlandt Parker, a career military officer in 1918. They lived at various posts across the country, using Marlborough St. as a permanent address. Parker's name and the Marlborough St. address listed on one of the portrait's labels indicate a date between 1918-1935 for the frame. Mar. 17, 2024

AN OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING ATTRIBUTED TO GILBERT STUART, 19 C.

          Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Oil on canvas portrait of George Washington with powdered hair, wearing a dark cherry red velvet coat attributed to Gilbert Stuart (American, 1755 - 1828). Housed in a giltwood frame. Note: Gilbert Stuart began his career as a provincial portrait painter in the American colonies and eventually went to London for further training. Under the generous tutelage of expatriate Benjamin West, Stuart quickly mastered the painterly brushwork of the Grand Manner, which was the favored style of Sir Joshua Reynolds, the leading portraitist of the day. Stuart is perhaps known best for his idealized, solemn, and dignified portraits of George Washington, which have come to represent the personification of Washington as the "father of his country."
