*A Crimean War Group of 3 awarded to Charles Stuart, 71st Highlanders, comprising: Crimea, 1854-56,

    Est: £300 - £400

*A Crimean War Group of 3 awarded to Charles Stuart, 71st Highlanders, comprising: Crimea, 1854-56, single clasp, Sebastopol (Captain C. Stuart. 71st. Highlanders.), privately engraved in contemporary capitals; Turkish Crimea, 1855-56, Sardinia Issue, unnamed as issued; Turkey, Order of the Medjidie, 5th class breast badge in silver, gold and enamel, 18.5mm width; Each medal with silver ‘claw-type’ suspension pin upon ribbon, fitted in a contemporary case (with central area originally intended for a pair of miniatures), slight red enamel loss to centre of last, group generally very fine to good very fine (3) Turkey, Ottoman Empire, Order of the Medjidie: London Gazette: 2 March 1858. While no Captain Charles Stuart is confirmed on the roll of the 71st Highlanders in the Crimean War, a Captain Robert Charles William Stuart is indeed confirmed (the only officer of this name), suggesting that might have preferred to use his second given name. The second son of Sir Simeon Henry Stuart, 5th Baronet (formerly a Lieutenant in the 71st Foot and Royal Canadian Rifles), and Georgiana Frances Stuart (née Gun-Cuninghame), Charles Stuart was born in 1827 at Haywards Heath, West Sussex, and joined the 71st Foot as a young Ensign in 1846. He was appointed Adjutant in 1849, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1850 - initially serving with the 71st Foot in Canada. He also saw action during Crimean War, taking part in the Siege of Sebastopol. He was promoted to Captain without purchase on 12th January 1855 and later received the Order of the Medjidie in 1858. He served with the 2nd Queen’s Royal Regiment between c.1858 and 1860, in the 37th Middlesex Volunteer Corps in 1861, and in the 3rd Administrative Battalion of the Derbyshire Rifles, before retiring to Canada c. 1863, apparently retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He married Madeline Torriano Maurice Stuart (née Shillington), and appear to have had as many as 10 children, including Houlton John Stuart Stuart (Later Sir, 8th Baronet). He died at Ottawa on 21 January 1883, at the age of 57.
