Wetmatige beweging (Mathematical Movement) (1966) Celluloid on perspex, 178.2 x 149.7 cm Provenance: - Private collection, the Netherlands, 1966 - Private collection, the Netherlands, 2010 - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Including a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. This work is a variation on the 'Wetmatige Beweging' dating from 1965, which is part of the collection of the Centraal Museum in Utrecht (inv.no. 25884). While other artists mainly stuck to expressing their emotions and giving their own personal interpretation of reality, Peter Struycken went in search of fixed structures and the laws of shape and colour (combinations). Everything needed to be logical, controllable, and consistent. Between 1963 and 1967, Struycken almost exclusively made abstract artworks titled ‘Wetmatige Beweging’ (Mathematical Movement), of which this work on offer is an example. With these artworks, he gets rid of every visible reality in his search for order which is determined by an underlying structure of ‘laws’. Based on a series of numbers, he lets the shape, in this case a square, and colour, change step by step. The final image is a representation of the movement of this change. The 'mathematical movement' in this work on offer begins with the small square visible just below the centre of the artwork. In five steps, the square transforms into the narrow wyber shape, overlapping the small square. The changes are all consistent and step-by-step. By organising and giving structure to concepts such as shape and colour, Struycken stimulates the visual experience. According to Struycken, lawful, mathematical organisation is needed to be able to consciously perceive an image. Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request. Wetmatige Beweging (Mathematical Movement) (1966) Celluloid on perspex, 100 x 100 cm Provenance: - Galerie Nouvelles Images, The Hague - Auction Christie's, Amsterdam, 16 April 2013, lot 277 - Private collection, the Netherlands Exhibited: - Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Peter Struycken - Schilderijen en reliëfs: wetmatige beweging, 25 November 1966 - 8 January 1967 - Groninger Museum, Groningen, Peter Struycken - Schilderijen en reliëfs: wetmatige beweging, 21 January - 19 February 1967 Note: Including a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Based on a series of numbers, he lets the shape and colour, change step by step. The final image is a representation of the movement of this change. The basic shape of the ‘mathematical movement' in this current lot, is the red shape on the right, which consists of four narrowing stacked rectangles. The green colour consists of the same rectangles, but these are shifting upwards. This artwork is also divided into three equal columns. Each column starts with the colour red on the right side, but from the right to the left column, the colour red gradually darkens from a bright red to a dark brown. The stacked rectangles are different in size for each column. While it probably takes some time to see the above, the colour change in this work on offer is easier to understand: the colour green transforms to white, and the colour red changes into black; both colour changes proceed step by step. On the right side of the artwork, the red and green conjoin with both the same brightness and saturation (strength of colour). By organising and giving structure to concepts such as shape and colour, Struycken stimulates the visual experience. According to Struycken, lawful, mathematical organisation is needed to be able to consciously perceive an image. Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request. KTV,five colour photographs on black cardboard, 70x100 cm Executed 1977. "This lot is probably one of the last remaining works from a small series that I made in 1977. They’re stages from a process of a developing line that I generated on a tube. The core of the work lies, in what I find amazing, in the line that erratically develops over the screen, which is visible in the bottom three pictures. Once the screen is fully filled, the structural character of the line type is retained, visible in the left-hand large picture. But also, if I continue to draw the line, repeating what was previously done, the overall picture (visual structure) remains the same with no changes, which is visible in the right picture). Yet in the meantime, no fragment between picture 1 and picture 2 are the same. And this character is permanent, however often the image is overwritten. I would have expected the image to become amorphous (noise-like) when overwriting. That this is not the case can only be the result of the algorithm’s particular manner in becoming visible. A pleasant feature is perhaps the line which constantly changes colour during this process. Otherwise the whole picture would be one-colour. I calculated the colours algorithmically on the basis of interference of three different sine waves: one for red, one for green and one for blue, the three colours of a colour monitor, to reach a coherent synergy. From a recent publication regarding the use of computercontrolled work by Carolyn L. Kane, “Chromatic Algorithm; Synthetic Color, Computer Art and Aesthetics after Code’’, published by The University of Chicago Press in 2014, I would presume that I was the first to determine colour algorithms. There are programmers and artists who (much) earlier than me generated images on a display screen, but their colours were derived from camera images or manually selected colours or colour filters that were photographically added. The work in this auction, once purchased by the previous owner at Galerie Swart in Amsterdam, is one of the first works in the world using computer generated colours. " Peter Struycken, Provenance: Acquired from Swart Galerie, Amsterdam.
