William Strutt (1825-1915) 'The Prior's Feast',

        Est: £7,000 - £10,000

William Strutt (1825-1915) 'The Prior's Feast', oil on canvas, signed, 104cm x 80cm William Strutt was born in Teignmouth, Devon, the son of William Thomas Strutt (1777-1850), an accomplished miniaturist. He began painting with his father and later studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Strutt became a highly successful book illustrator and was barely able to keep up with his commissions. The resulting strain caused a near break down and he decided to leave Europe and emigrate to Australia in 1850. Much restored he continued to paint and produced some of the earliest depictions of Colonial life which now have huge importance for historians. Strutt left Melbourne and returned to London in January 1862. He exhibited twenty three times at the Royal Academy between 1865 and 1893, the majority of his work was genre and animal subjects.
