Lo stesso soggetto compare sul frontespizio del libro A pedestrian tour in Calabria & Sicily edito nel 1842 e ripubblicato nel 1844 con incisioni illustrative. La stessa immagine, questa volta a colori, è utilizzata per la copertina di Passando per il Cilento. Avventure e scoperte di un "turista" inglese nel Cilento borbonico, edito recentemente dall'editore cilentese Galzerano. A pedestrian tour in Calabria & Sicily era il resoconto del viaggio intrapreso a piedi da Strutt all'età di 19 anni con l'amico poeta Willam Jackson spinto "dal desiderio di acquisire conoscenze, per la sua professione di artista, circa gli scenari ed i costumi di quell'interessante regione". Quel viaggio avventuroso che portava i due amici ad affrontare anche la pericolosità dei briganti del Cilento, era pervaso dallo spirito romantico che in quell'epoca accomunava intellettuali ed artisti spinti dal desiderio del cosiddetto Grand Tour, visitando principalmente l'Italia, Malta e poi la Grecia.         Ansicht der Wasserfälle von Tivoli Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 58 x 75 cm. Rechts unten signiert, ortsbezeichnet und datiert „A.J. Strutt, Rome, 1858.“ In gekehltem vergoldetem Rahmen. Die dramatischen Wasserfälle von Tivoli waren schon in der Antike berühmt und Goethe nannte es eines der „ersten Naturschauspiele“. Zahlreiche Künstler des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts bereisten die Gegend und so nimmt es nicht Wunder, dass auch Arthur John Strutt, der ja auch zu Fuß Kalabrien und Sizilien erkundete – Tivoli besuchte und mehrere Ansichten fertigte, die teilweise – wie auch bei dem hier angebotenen Gemälde der Fall – in mehreren Versionen auf uns gekommen sind.         This is a beautiful estate found watercolor painting by listed English artist Arthur John Strutt (Chelmsford 1819-1888 Rome). Strutt is perhaps best known for his depictions of the Campagna Romana. This superbly rendered painting features Padre Evangelista and Fra. Felicia in discussion. Set in a garden, the outline of Venice can be seen in the distance. The writing on the reverse indicates this scene is at Montughi near Florence. It is marked for AJ Strutt and the year 1839. - 18 x 12 3/4"

Blick von erhöhtem Standpunkt auf die bergige Landschaft mit Gebäuden und den darunterliegenden, idyllisch ins tiefe Tal rauschenden Wasserfällen von Tivoli im sonnigen Morgenlicht. Im Vordergrund rechts ragt ein Felsstück mit zwei alten knorrigen Bäumen ins Bild. Auf der linken vorderen Seite führt am Felsenrand ein Weg entlang, auf dem zwei Reisende auf ihren Mulis, ein Junge mit Hund, zwei Frauen in Tracht, sowie im Hintergrund ein Mann mit seiner Rinderherde zu erkennen sind.         Chelmsford, 1818 - Roma, 1888 Campagna romana con ruderi Firmato 'J Strutt' e datato 1861 in basso a destra Olio su tela, cm 43X66 Provenienza: Roma, collezione privata Figlio del paesaggista Jacob George Strutt del quale fu allievo, viaggiò attraverso la Francia e la Svizzera in compagnia del padre prima di giungere entrambi in Italia nel 1831 per stabilirsi definitivamente a Roma. Rimase per il resto della sua vita in Italia, interessandosi soprattutto agli aspetti pittoreschi, in particolare quelli della campagna romana e rivolgendo la sua attenzione in particolare ai paesaggi e ai costumi dei suoi abitanti. Nel 1841 intraprese un viaggio a piedi verso il Regno delle due Sicilie in compagnia dell'amico William Jackson, partendo da Porta San Giovanni il 30 aprile e giungendo a Palermo il 15 dicembre dopo aver attraversato la Campania e la Calabria. Le sue impressioni furono raccolte nel volume 'Un viaggio a piedi in Calabria e Sicili'¿ che ebbe un notevole successo soprattutto nei paesi anglosassoni ed è considerato ancora oggi un fonte importante per la conoscenza della società del tempo.
