KLODS FARRERS AND POLS SAKS, authors. NIKLAVA STRUNKES (LATVIAN 1894-1966), illustrator. NOSLEPUMAINS KREISERS 1914 [Mysterious cruiser 1914], Riga, J.Altbergs and Biedri, 1929. Size: 8vo (205 x 145 mm), softcover, 165 pages. Text in Latvian. NOTES Niklavs Strunke was a Latvian painter, graphic artist and author, and one of the most well-known Latvian modernists. His exceptionally eclectic artistic style blended elements of Latvian folk art, French Cubism, Italian painting, and Russian Constructivism. Born in Poland in 1894, he and his family moved to Valmiera (now Latvia), where he graduated from the Liepina Academy of Sciences in 1909. The same year, Strunke moved to St. Petersburg, where he enrolled at the Tavricheskaya Art School and studied under the likes of Nikolas Roerich and Ivan Bilibin. The artist briefly left for Riga in 1913 to study fine art and work in illustration, but soon returned to St. Petersburg for the sake of the cityÕs lucrative education. He earned his masterÕs from the I.E. Repin Institute of Fine Art, Sculpture and Architecture in 1915. During World War I, Strunke volunteered to serve in the 6th Division of the Latvian Riflemen regiment. After the foundation of the Latvian SSR, the artist moved to Riga and was active as a graphic artist and as a scene designer for the Moscow Latvian Theatre. In 1919 Strunke joined the short-lived Riga ArtistsÕ Group (disbanded in 1920). Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he traveled extensively throughout Europe: Berlin, Rome, Florence, Capri and worked in Italy as a graphic artist During World War II, Strunke lived in Sweden, where he actively exhibited, holding personal exhibitions in Karlstad (1945), Malmo (1947), Lund (1948) and Stockholm (1927, 1952, 1962), as well group exhibitions with Latvian and Estonian artists in Stockholm (1946) and Hamburg (1964). He died in Rome in 1966, leaving a legacy of over 30 illustrated novels, 700 illustrated book covers, and tens of scene decorations for the WorkersÕ Theatre and the Latvian National Opera, and about 50 porcelain decorations. PROVENANCE INFORMATION This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. The dedicated collector acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American institutions. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
