Harris G. Strong Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1920 - d. 2006

In the early days, industrious artist Harris Strong benefited from the inspiration and financial assistance of his aunt, Henrietta Strong. He enrolled at NC State, where he majored in chemical engineering to understand the science of glazing. After serving during World War II, he completed his degree and enrolled in ceramic classes at New York University. While working as an engineer at Brooklyn's Kelby Pottery, he and Kelby's chief designer, Robert Krasner, partnered to form the Potters of Wall Street.

After Potters of Wall Street dissolved, artist Harris Strong worked for American Art Industries, but never abandoned his dream of having his own company. He formed Harris G. Strong, Inc., in 1950, where he created award-winning decorative ceramic pieces. With the growing popularity and demand of Harris Strong's paintings and artwork for sale, his business achieved international success. Collectible works of ceramic tiles are for sale at Invaluable and at auction.

    Est: $400 - $600

Description: Harris Strong (American, 1920-2006), Abstract Glazed Tile Composition, signed lower right, twelve abstract glazed tiles in a silvered wood frame with linen mat. Frame size: 24 3/8 in. x 30 3/8 in. Harris G. Strong was born 1920 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. During World War II he served in the Army as a cryptographer in the Pacific. After being discharged, he graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in chemical engineering. Later he studied ceramic art at New York University. In 1970, Harris moved his family and business to Ellsworth, Hancock County, Maine. They built a factory in nearby Trenton, Maine, but a fire destroyed all the glaze formulas Strong had developed for more than 20 years. He decided to concentrate on the other forms of wall decor the business produced: prints, serigraphs, woodcuts, etchings, engravings, collage and paintings. (annexgalleries.com) Measurements: Height: by sight of tiles 17 3/4 in. x Width: 23 3/4 in. Condition: Good condition, some small gabs in grout between tiles, wear and separation to joints on frame. Est: $200 - $300

Harris Strong (American 1920-2006) Mid Century Modern Abstract Collage. Signed de Barde. Harris Strong was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1920.  His aunt owned a greeting card company, and that influenced him to become an artist.  He also had a strong scientific bent, so he was meticulous about the "engineering" of his tiles, which featured many innovations when competitors were creating "pie plates," in his own dismissive works. During the war, he was a cryptographer, working directly under General Douglas MacArthur during World War II.  Afterward, he studied ceramics* and the chemistry of ceramic glazes at North Carolina State University.  Then he worked in Brooklyn, New York at Kelby Pottery.  Later his own business really took off. He had showrooms in Chicago, New York and Tokyo… he created a 30' long free-standing ceramic tile mural for the Waldorf-Astoria in York City, which remains in place.  One friend says he was the first to ever show art at a home furnishings show. He loved, and sang Gilbert & Sullivan, collected stamps, and played bridge.  In 1970, Strong relocated to Trenton, Maine, but after a fire destroyed his glazes developed over 20 years, he shifted his focus to prints, serigraphs*, woodcuts*, etchings*, engravings*, collage* and paintings. Strong died in 2006.   Size: 54 x 41 in.  #4035
