    • Hendrik van Streek, Still Life with a Rummer, Flute Glass, and Fruit in a Wan Li Dish
      Nov. 14, 2020

Hendrik van Streek, Still Life with a Rummer, Flute Glass, and Fruit in a Wan Li Dish

      Est: €20,000 - €22,000

Signed lower left: H:.v. Streek f. This portrait format composition depicts a small but precious selection of objects against a dark backdrop. They include a slightly overturned Wan Li dish, a rummer and a tall, slender glass flute. The two glasses are only visible against the dark background through the masterfully rendered reflections of light which sparkle in the darkness. Oranges, peaches, and a lemon have been arranged across the stone ledge and in the ceramic bowl, mirroring its slightly diagonal placement. The composition is enlivened by the addition of a red tablecloth concealing the blade of a knife whilst its handle teeters precariously over the table's edge. This motif is often found in Dutch still life painting as a symbol for the unstable and transitory nature of earthly life. The author of this work, Hendrik van Streek, was the son of the Amsterdam based still life painter Juriaan van Streek, and presumably spent part of his apprenticeship learning under his father. Other artistic teachers included the church painter Emanuel de Witte and the sculptor Willem van der Hoeven. However, van Streek's paintings display most similarity to those of his father, and the works of the two artists are frequently confused. We would like to thank Dr Fred G. Meijer for confirming the authenticity of this piece.
