Ruth G. Strauss Sold at Auction Prices

Ruth G. Strauss was well known for her vigorous and lively use of watercolor. The versatile New York City artist traveled throughout the world, painting on site. Throughout her career, which spanned 60 years, this 20th century painter established herself with the American public and the international community; her art was popular both at home and abroad. One-woman exhibits took place in Paris, Lisbon and the US Virgin Islands as well as in New York and other US cities. Her works were also shown at the Parke-Bernet Gallery, the Lotos Club, and the Rochester Memorial Museum as part of its permanent collection. Other paintings were sold to renowned actor and art collector, Vincent Price.

Ms. Strauss studied in Paris and at the Art Students League in New York City early in her career but considered herself mainly self-taught. Her paintings, created over a long and successful career, are a wondrous collection of a world traveler’s reflections.

The artist was well known to the business community, especially within the travel industry. International airlines and government tourist offices collected and displayed her paintings. Those of Scandinavia, Israel, Portugal and Australia sponsored her to visit their respective countries to create new works. Many of these original paintings, and lithograph copies in some cases, were widely disseminated for viewing, promotion and sale. Airlines which sponsored Ms. Strauss in her overseas travels or exhibited and promoted her works were SAS, El Al, Air France, Alitalia, Qantas, TWA and Lufthansa. Her work, admired by the public and critics alike, was often covered by the media.

The artist visited and painted in England, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Greece, Israel, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Fiji, Tahiti, Mexico and Virgin Island, Caribbean and United States locations. Her work also appeared in magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens and various travel- and fashion-related promotions. Other works were used to illustrate writers’ stories or reproduced as greeting cards and post cards.

Ruth Strauss’ unique paintings, whether sold to individuals and organizations, or donated by the artist to non profit groups, have adorned the walls of many homes and businesses in the United States and abroad.
