Accomplished pencil drawing in paper by Meyer Strauss (1831-1905). Signed: Very seriously yours, M. Straus. This is a rare and collectible drawing by Straus. 8.5" x 6.5", Some water damage on right side, does not affect the drawing. Meyer Straus journeyed through life with gypsy-like wanderlust, emigrating at 17 years of age in 1848 from Bavaria, Germany to the United States, where he moved from Ohio to St. Louis, Missouri, to Mobile, Alabama, to New Orleans to Chicago, Illinois, where brutal winters and failing health prompted a move to San Francisco. Accomplished and prolific, Straus was employed to paint scenery for leading city theaters throughout his career: the Old Pine Street Theater (St. Louis), Hooley Theater (Chicago), and the Bush Street Theater and Grand Opera House (San Francisco). However, while in Louisiana he painted masterful oil landscapes, such as Moonlight on the Bayou and Louisiana Swamp In 1876 though, he dedicated himself to easel painting. He opened a Montgomery Street studio, and made sketching trips into Yosemite, Marin County, the Monterey Peninsula, and up to Oregon. He published some of these scenes as magazine illustrations. His paintings include still lifes, California missions, figure studies and landscapes of Northern California. He died in San Francisco in 1905. Meyer Straus was a member of the Bohemian Club, and the San Francisco Art Association. His work was exhibited widely, and his works are held by the California Historical Society, the Nevada Museum, and the Oakland Museum. Provenance: Country (if not USA): State: California City/County: Date:
