Signed lower right, 20" x 36" (image), 29.5" x 45.5" (frame). In the 1870s Straus moved to San Francisco and made many sketching trip around Northern California and Oregon. Provenance: the painting was passed down within the family.

Signed, dated, and titled on back. Meyer Straus, a Bavarian-born artist, immigrated to the United States in 1848 and eventually settled in San Francisco. He transitioned from theatrical scene painting to fine art, focusing on landscapes of Northern California. His work was exhibited widely, including at the San Francisco Art Association and the California State Fair. Straus's contribution to the art world lies in his realistic depictions of the American West, particularly the stunning landscapes of California. Overall Size: 17 1/2 x 26 3/4 in. Meyer Straus (1831-1905). 19th century oil on canvas titled on back Indians in Yosemite Valley. Straus was born in Bavaria and emigrated to the United States in 1848. He lived in various U.S.states and worked primarily as a theatrical scene painter until 1877. After a final move to Colorado and San Francisco he abandoned theater work and concentrated on easel painting during which time he traveled to Yosemite and Oregon. Title Indiansin Yosemite Valley. Oil on canvas laied down on board. Image 12 inches x 20 inches. Frame 16 inches x 24 inches. Good condition. Shipping weight 4 downs.

Meyer Straus moved to San Francisco in 1875 and established himself as an easel painter. At one point, his art was praised by one of the most prominent art patrons of the day, Jane Stanford. He favored a realistic style; as a vehement critic of the Impressionist movement, he declared, "Impressionism is not art. It is a fad. Note: Bavarian artist Meyer Straus worked throughout the United States, including the Lower Mississippi Valley area. Straus enjoyed landscape painting and was well-known for his depictions of the rivers, lakes, and bayous surrounding New Orleans, as well as portrayals of Native Americans and local wildlife. Straus also worked as a theatrical scene painter for much of his career. The work offered here of Bayou Teche displays Straus skill with a sophisticated and dramatic composition, as elements such as the cattle, trees, bayou in the foreground, and protruding branch are designed to lead the eye around the canvas.
