ROLAND STRASSER* (Vienna 1892 - 1974 in Santa Monica)

              Est: €1,600 - €3,000

ROLAND STRASSER* (Vienna 1892 - 1974 in Santa Monica) Lady with umbrella oil/canvas, 95 x 66 cm signed Strasser ESTIMATE € 1600 - 3000 STARTING PRICE € 1600 The painter and graphic artist Roland Strasser was the son of the sculptor and painter Arthur Strasser; he first studied at the Vienna Academy with Jungwirth and from 1911 to 1915 at the Munich Academy with Angelo Jank. Little is known about his early work. Like his older brother Benjamin Strasser, who also studied painting and graphics, he was able to get a job as a war painter in the art group of the k.u.k. Kriegspressequatier (Imperial and Royal War Press Dept.). After the war, Strasser illustrated children's books and lithographed for the Society for Reproducing Art. From 1919 Roland Strasser went on study trips, e.g. to Holland, Siam, Java and New Guinea. From 1922 to 1924 he travelled to China, Mongolia and Tibet. In the autumn of 1924, Strasser settled in London and exhibited successfully in the same year. He stayed in India during the winter of 1924, and in the spring of 1925, he crossed the Kula Pass in the Himalayas towards Tibet. In 1925, he stayed again in Mongolia (Urga, today Ulaanbaatar) and undertook trips to the province of Kobdo (Khowd-Almo). There he was arrested by Russian soldiers. After his release, Strasser made his way to China; in Peking he was plundered by insurgent soldiers of Changsolin and deprived of the entire artistic result of his journey. In 1927, Strasser returned to Vienna, but immediately afterwards moved back to London, where he worked until 1952. He then moved to Santa Monica, California. Strasser is considered one of the great travelling artists and orientalist romantics of the 20th century. Works in Heeresgeschichtliches Museum (Museum of Military History), Vienna. PLEASE NOTE: The purchase price consists of the highest bid plus the buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, the fee of artists resale rights. In the case of normal taxation (marked °), a premium of 24% is added to the highest bid. The mandatory sales tax of 13%, for photographys 20%, is added to the sum of the highest bid and the buyer's premium. The buyer's premium amounts to 28% in case of differential taxation. The sales tax is included in the differential taxation.

The woman in the center of the picture looks in the direction of the viewer. Her dark blue dress contrasts with the strong red of the umbrella she is wearing. This red is repeated in the gloves she holds in her right hand. The background appears in various shades of turquoise, which create a certain liveliness in the image. Nevertheless, the ensemble as such appears calm and self-contained and coherent. Fine craquelé.

              Roland Strasser (1895-1974)

              Est: €20,000 - €30,000

Roland Strasser (1895-1974), Balinese men watching a cockfight, signed 'Strasser' (lower right); annotated 'Roland Strasser, Bali' (on the stretcher), oli on canvas, 102x82 cm, Provenance: -Acquired directly from the artist by a Dutch KNIL officer in 1946 during his stay in Bali. -Thence by descent to the present owner, Spanish by descent, son of a French mother, educated in Vienna, where his father was naturalized, Roland Strasser inherits in rich measure the European tradition of design, draughtmanship, and decoration. He was born in Vienna in April 1886. His father, Arthur Strasser, a Spaniard eminent as a sculptor, and as Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in the Austrian capital, bred him to art, and trained him in his school. More detailed about the family: the Basque name of the Strasser’s family is Quirquez. Father Arthur Strasser was Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour and held high Austrian decorations. He won the Grand Prix at Paris in 1900. Roland’s gifts were thus fostered by example, by encouragement, and by the stringent discipline of education. He studied at the Academies of Arts in Vienna and Munich. During WWI he was the official war-painter of the Austrian Army. Roland Strasser has travelled widely. He came to Indonesia in 1920, lived and worked in Java, Sumatra, Irian Jaya and Bali. He exhibited frequently in Indonesia. He travelled with the Dutch artist Willem Dooyewaard - whom he met in 1921 - in China, Tibet and Mongolia. Lived in Kintamani, Bali, with his wife from 1935 until 1945, after which he finally settled in in Santa Monica, USA, where he died in 1974. Roland Strasser was inspired by the romantic island of Bali, where Hindu art and tradition are intermingled with what is indigenous. The colours of Bali glow on his canvasses. What he has seen, he has seen with no false or indolent eye. A sculptor’s training gives weight and volume to his work. In his portraits ‘soul speaks to soul’. A gifted painter is also a psychologist. He does for us what no camera can do. He perceives and portrays personality. He is a scientific witness and also an interpreter. Strasser’s works leave on the memory an indelible impression of Bali grace, they humanize our knowledge of parts of the Far East. His Balinese works are rich in colour, unforgetable in design, full of temperament. The writer Michael E. Saddler refers to a theory by Mrs Laurence Binyon in her book “The mind of the artist“ (1909), and mentiones six points in regard to which a work of art should show fitness and skill: ‘It must have a rhythmic vitality, a significant form, conformity with nature, fitness of colouring, a beautiful composition, and a fine quality of workmanship‘. When measured by this exacting canon, this lot on offer, representing a Balinese cockfight, does not fall short. Source: -Michael E. Cuypers must have known the painters Strasser and Dooyewaard. His legacy included a portrait of himself painted by Strasser. He passed away in Oostham on 11 April 1971. Sampik dancer ‘Here, we are immediately struck by the fact that we are dealing with an artist who transcends the mundane. Mr. Strasser excels by using a bold style, through which he portrays such a powerful image of his Balinese men and women. They are living human beings, their bronzed bodies moving smoothly and rhythmically in the shadow of a temple, or on a light-filled, open square.’* This was written in the review of the Roland Strasser exhibition held at the Art Society of Surabaya in Indonesia in the fall of 1938. The Sampik Dancer is a wonderful example of a painting that shows the strength of expression, the true tropical atmosphere and the lively colouring that make Strasser such a favoured artist of Balinese images.** The work that is on offer at this auction is a somewhat modified version of the painting that went under the hammer at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on the 9th July this year, as lot number 319. Roland Strasser (1895-1974), A Balinese Legong dancer, signed 'Strasser' (lower right), oil on canvas, 101x56 cm, Provenance: -Former collection of the late Dr. P.F.J. Cuypers. Pieter Frans Jozef Cuypers (1896 -1971) was born in Hanyang, now part of Wuhan, China. After his medical study, Cuypers moved to the Dutch East Indies in 1925 or 1926. In 1928 he was in Mataram, Lombok, and thereafter in Malang. From 1934 until May 1935 he worked as a doctor with the Public Health Service for the Central Citizens Hospital of Soerabaja. Because he contracted the infection tuberculosis (TBC), he returned to Belgium in 1938 and there he followed in his father’s footsteps as a doctor in Oostham. Cuypers must have known the painters Strasser and Dooyewaard. His legacy included a portrait of himself painted by Strasser. He passed away in Oostham on 11 April 1971. ´In “Legong” the artist shows the graceful movement and gestures of a little dancer, dressed in the rich crimson and gold fabric of the Balinese. The exhibition is open until the 12th October; we highly recommend everyone to pay a visit to this exhibition. It isn’t often that one gets to see such strong-life paintings here.´ This is what the journalist, W.C.B. of the Indische Courant, wrote on the 6th November, 1938 about the exhibition of the works of Roland Strasser on display at the Art Society in Batavia. It is possible that in this quote he was describing the painting of a little ‘Legong’ dancer that is on offer in this auction; in any case, it describes a painting of the same model who is portrayed as ‘Legong’ in the well-known book by J.P. Koenraads about the Dooijewaard brothers.* The Indische Courant’s reviewer begins his above-mentioned article with a short account of Strasser’s artistic background. ‘Roland Strasser is a lover of the East and of Asian people. His preference is to paint Eastern characters and with that goal in mind he has travelled around various parts of Asia for many years, as was reported in this journal recently. He has seen the Mongolian Steppe and the jungles of New Guinea; of late he has been in Bali, and this exhibition is witness to that. The painter rightly deserves to be acclaimed as an international artist, not only by virtue of his wanderings, but also because he is the son of a Spaniard and a French mother and attended art school in Vienna, having firstly learned from this own father, Arthur Strasser, who was a well-known sculptor at the time. The influence of that early education can still be seen in the way that Roland Strasser treats his subjects and figures. One can recognise the eye of a sculptor, who sees the person first and foremost as a piece of sculpture.’ The sculptural quality in Strasser’s work comes clearly to the fore in this painting of a Balinese dancer. The elegant body control that characterizes this figure is caught in a timeless pose against a peaceful background as a symbol of grace. *J.P. Koenraads, De Gebroeders Jacob en Willem Dooijewaard, Hilversum 1966, p.98. ill.
