TOBIAS STRANOVER (1684-1756) A Jay Sitting on the Handle of a Basket of Strawberries, with a Blue-Tit in the Foreground Oil on canvas, 65 x 49.5cm (25½ x 19½) Contained in a superb early Georgian carved and giltwood frame Tobias Stranover was born at Nagyszeben (Sibiu) in the northern foothills of the Transylvanian Alps in what is now Romania. He was the son-in-law of Jacob Bogdani, by whom he was taught as a painter of animals and still-lives. He was itinerant throughout Europe, visiting Hamburg and Dresden before settling in England, where he stayed for the rest of his career. Bogdani had been the first to arrive in London in the 1690s, where he was soon taken up by the court, painting a distinguished series of paintings for the Royal Family. He was joined here by his son-in-law (Stranover married Elizabeth Bogdani) and for the first decades of the eighteenth century the family provided the finest exotic bird and animal paintings in London. Stranover’s work has freshness and exoticism which is absent from the work of the few other animal painters working in Britain at this date – artists such as Francis Barlow and the elder John Griffier – and his widespread commercial success is readily understandable.

TOBIAS STRANOVER (HUNGARIAN SCHOOL 1684-1756) PEACHES ON A SILVER TAZZA WITH GRAPES, A PEAR, A MELON, AND A BULLFINCH ON A MARBLE LEDGE Oil on canvas. Signed. 63.5 cm high x 76.8cm wide Tobias Stranover was one of the leading emigré decorative painters working in England in the early part of the eighteenth century.  Together with Jacob Bogdani, he was one of the major artists specialising in the painting of exotic birds and wild life. His work brought a lightness and exoticism to English still-life and animal paintings which were missing in the early English works of Marmaduke Craddock and Francis Barlow.  Stranover was born in Sibu, now in Czechoslovakia, and travelled to England, Hamburg and Dresden.  Although examples of his work can be found in the museums of Hamburg, Dresden and Budapest, his work is most commonly found in old English collections. His extensive knowledge of the different fruits and birds of the world can be seen in his paintings and his later works become more detailed and much fuller.  He is last recorded in 1731, when he was paid 10 gns. for a "fowl piece with a peacock in it" (Lord Fitzwalter's accounts, now in the Hampshire Record Office). Tobias Stranover married Jacob Bogdani's daughter and it is thought that both artists collaborated occasionally.

TOBIAS STRANOVER STILL LIFE WITH GRAPES AND A BULLFINCH Tobias Stranover was a member of a family of artists from Hermannstadt (Sibiu). After a period of travelling, he lived in various German cities and eventually settled in London, where he married the daughter of the painter Jakob Bogdani who worked for the English court, and with whom Stranover presumably worked in close partnership. Both were among the finest painters of still lifes in England in the early 18th century. Stranover's paintings can be viewed in museums in Hamburg, Dresden and Budapest, but primarily of course in English private collections.
