    Aug. 17, 2022

Ltd. Ed. J.P. Strain Signed "Onward Christian Soldiers" Litho. Depicting Lee, Stuart & Jackson

    Est: $400 - $500

Ltd. Ed. J.P. Strain Signed "Onward Christian Soldiers" Litho. Depicting Lee, Stuart & Jackson A limited edition lithograph after an original watercolor gouache by historical artist John Paul Strain (born 1955), entitled "Onward Christian Soldiers," ca. 2004, the second print in Strain's "Lions in Winter Collection." The print is signed by Strain as "John Paul Strain," and also numbered "352/950," at lower right near Strain's signature in stone as "John Paul Strain © 2004." The "Lions in Winter Collection" crest -- comprised of two lion rampants flanking a heraldic shield with the "Stars and Bars" -- appears at top. Signed limited edition lithographs like this one were produced "using museum quality inks and pH neutral (acid-free) paper," according to the artist's website. The sight size of the print is approximately 28" x 23.5" including the custom matted insets. Not examined out of the frame. The framed piece overall measures 38.5" x 30.875" x 2." Accompanied by a corresponding Certificate of Authenticity from John Paul Strain Historical Art ™, print number 352/950. "Onward Christian Soldiers" depicts four major Confederate military commanders, General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), General J.E.B. Stuart (1833-1864), General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson (1824-1863), and Major John Pelham (1838-1863) on horseback filing through a snow-covered path during the winter of 1863, following a religious service in one of the log chapels built by the Stonewall Brigade near Fredericksburg, Virginia. As Strain explained in his historical background, Confederate leadership strongly emphasized religion during this phase of the Civil War and believed that recent military successes proved that their victory was divinely pre-ordained. Two of the four commanders depicted in "Onward Christian Soldiers" would be dead within six months, however: 24-year-old Major Pelham was struck by artillery shrapnel at the Battle of Kelly's Ford on March 17, 1863 and never regained consciousness; and 39-year-old Stonewall Jackson was felled by friendly fire on May 10, 1863. John Paul Strain is well-known for his hyper-realistic, meticulously detailed, and historically accurate paintings depicting important events and genre scenes from the Civil War, Wild West, and D-Day. "Onward Christian Soldiers" is the second of a series of six in the "Lions in Winter Collection"; alongside (I) "Lions in Winter"; (III) "Stonewall's Return"; (IV) "The Christmas Carol"; (V) "Stuart's Christmas Raid"; and (VI) "Defenders of the Valley." All of the signed limited edition prints, artist's proofs, and giclée canvas prints of "Onward Christian Soldiers" are sold out on the artist's website, https://johnpaulstrain.com. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
