    The Virgin and Child who embraces the infant Baptist, set in a landscape. An etching by the Painter-etcher from Spanish origin wo was active in Rome and trained under Salimbeni. His fine etched work is characterized by an elegant sensitive style. The etching is Signed: 'Vespasian S I F' in the bottom right corner and has the publishers address of Scipione Corneliano in the text line at left. Corneliano flourished between 1600-1622 in Rome and published two prints by Strada, this being one of them.

Wohl unbeschrieben. -- -- Stilistisch erinnert die technisch überzeugende und versierte Ausführung an den Radier-Duktus von Vespasiano Strada. Prachtvoller, kräftiger und tiefschwarzer Abzug mit sehr feinem Rändchen um die schön, und teils gratig zeichnende Plattenkante. Minimal stockfleckig, die untere rechte Eckenspitze fehlt, entlang des oberen Randes montiert, sonst in orignaler und sehr schöner Erhaltung. A fold in the upper corner.

Ottima impressione su carta vergellata apparentemente priva di filigrana. Al verso visibile traccia di controprova in nero verosimilmente riferibile alla figura di San Giovanni Battista, e marchio di collezione del pittore milanese Agostino Caironi (Lugt, 426).

    VESPASIANO STRADA Ecce Homo: Smaller Plate. Etching, early 1600s. 141x190 mm; 5 1/2x7 1/2 inches, with thread margins outside the border line. A very good impression of this extremely scarce etching. We have not found another impression at auction in the past 25 years. Strada (1582-1622), born of Spanish parentage in Italy, was chiefly a fresco painter active at Sant' Onofrio and Santa Maria Maddalena in Campo Marzio in Rome. Bartsch 2.
