STOZHAROV, VLADIMIR Spring in Zhelnikha Village, signed and dated 1955, also further signed, titled in Cyrillic and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 90 by 141 cm. Provenance: Collection of the Art Fund of the USSR (partial label on the stretcher). Important private collection, USA. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by Vladimir Stozharov, the artist's grandson. It has been included as No. 1467 in the complete registry of the artist's works, compiled by the family. Literature: Vladimir Fedorovich Stozharov, 1926-1973, Zhivopis, Risunok, Moscow, Sovetskii khudozhnik, 1977, p. 70, listed. Spring in Zhelnikha Village by Vladimir Stozharov, offered here for auction, is one of his first "village" works. The picture was painted in 1955, after the artist had returned from a trip to Siberia, on an inspired and sincere impulse that shows he had discovered his own group of themes and his own painting style. As in other works of this period, the composition is aligned horizontally but does, at the same time, extend into the background. The houses and barns of the small village of Zhelnikha near Volokolamsk are picturesquely dotted along a high river bank. The landscape seems to be virtually deserted, yet a feeling of everyday country life is conveyed very vividly. Noticing reliable signs that spring is on the way, Stozharov transfers them to the canvas: there is the soft snow melting in the sun, the exposed earth, the still bare branches of the trees stretching up towards the sun, the long shadows they cast, a flock of birds in the sky and chickens on thawed patches of ground. Subsequently, Stozharov's work was often to feature the subject of springtime in the countryside. But while in his works of the 1960s and 1970s, the leitmotif will be provided by the topic of the reawakening of the powerful driving force of life and the renewal of the world, here, in an earlier, lyrical canvas, spring is seen as being the gentle, tremulous breathing of nature. Fellow artists often recalled how Stozharov sought to capture the particular time when spring is approaching, and to convey it in his paintings: "He would leave Moscow in early spring... so as to catch snow and still have time to paint some winter motifs. But everything in the natural world was changing rapidly, and he had to hurry to paint both the thawed patches and the spring floods, and then the first green shoots, the village houses and, especially, the drying-houses and barns that he loved" (G. Daryin, "Vladimir Stozharov", Moskovskii khudozhnik, No. 1, 1974).

*STOZHAROV, VLADIMIR (1926-1973) Women Talking, dated "11 10 59". Oil on cardboard, laid on cardboard, 31.5 by 69 cm. Provenance: Acquired from Alexander Stozharov, the artist’s son, by the present owner. Important private collection, USA. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by Vladimir Stozharov, the artist’s grandson. It has been included as No. 164 in the complete artist’s registry of works, compiled by the family. Literature: Vladimir Fedorovich Stozharov. 1926–1973. Zhivopis, Risunok, Moscow, Sovetskii khudozhnik, 1977, p. 80, listed. Vladimir Stozharov painted Women Talking during one of his working trips to Kostroma and Yaroslavl regions, north east of Moscow, where the artist would often go beginning from the late 1950s. Stozharov, who belonged to pochvenniki, or “artists of the earth”, had a genuine love for the Russian countryside and the distinctiveness of its centuries-old way of life. Stozharov’s landscapes nearly always feature real people, while he declared himself to be “no lover of uninhabited nature”. His favourite subjects are rural landscapes that have been shaped by people, and Women Talking, presented here for auction, is a remarkable example of such a genre landscape. Capturing the everyday life of a modest village, the artist lovingly recreates on the canvas outbuildings, barns and the patches of first autumn snow, which lie in bright spots on the withered grass and clods of earth; and this colour pattern, as well as the intimate, behind-the-scenes, subject matter generate a poetic image of homeland. Stozharov was genuinely interested in painting unassuming rural buildings – huts, bathhouses, barns and sheds, – as for him, they embodied the concept of human life. Later, he would sum up this aspect of his worldview by saying that he wanted “to convey the beauty of people’s souls... through the image of the house where they live and of the land they walk on.” Therefore, although the genre element of the conversation between the two women in bright skirts and scarves complements and enlivens the work, it does so without becoming its conceptual or compositional centre. In this, as in many other works, the most impressive aspects of Stozharov’s pictorial language are a warm and rich colour palette, and a sweeping painting style. Such charming immediacy and warmth are mainly typical of Stozharov's small-scale works, which continue the artistic tradition of the Union of Russian Artists, incorporating the realistic manner of painting, specificity in conveying the material world, and poetic vision, characteristic of its members Turzhansky, Arkhipov and Yuon.

*STOZHAROV, VLADIMIR (1926-1973) Woman Washing Her Hair, dated "26 9 59". Oil on cardboard, laid on cardboard, 51.5 by 74 cm. Provenance: Acquired from Alexander Stozharov, the artist’s son, by the present owner. Important private collection, USA. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by Vladimir Stozharov, the artist’s grandson. It has been included as No. 1987 in the complete registry of the artist’s works, compiled by the family. Literature: Vladimir Fedorovich Stozharov. 1926–1973. Zhivopis, Risunok, Moscow, Sovetskii khudozhnik, 1977, p. 78. Woman Washing Her Hair is one of a small number of studies for a large unfinished painting Bania (The Bathhouse), on which the artist worked in 1958–1961. Today, the only clues as to what it could have looked like are contained in a series of virtuoso nudes – studies in which the models are either washing or doing the laundry. When Stozharov worked on these studies, he already had the main concept in mind; which is why he leaves out all the secondary elements, carefully selects the subject and all the details. As a result, Woman Washing Her Hair not only preserves the freshness and immediacy of a life study, and the vibrant expressivity of an impasto painting technique; crucially, it also boasts a completed spatial and compositional structure. Stozharov eschews the academic conventions regarding light and shadow and places the figure into the composition, focussing primarily on the movement of her hand, and aspiring to capture the model’s distinctive pose. The originality and decorativeness of Stozharov’s painterly style come in handy as he seeks to convey the nuances of colour reflected on the model’s bare skin, and to create a work that is not contrived but a genuine, emotionally truthful one.
