      RENÉE STOUT (1958 - ) Untitled (Pittsburgh).

      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

RENÉE STOUT (1958 - ) Untitled (Pittsburgh). Oil on cotton canvas, 1983. 609x711 mm; 24x28 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right. Provenance: private collection, Massachusetts. Untitled (Pittsburgh) is an example of Renée Stout's early proficiency in realist painting. Born in Junction City, Kansas, Stout received her BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1980, where she trained as a realist painter in the manner of Edward Hopper and Richard Estes. Stout has lived and worked in Washington, DC, since 1985. The artist is known for her multi-media approach, with paintings, sculpture, photography, installation, and printmaking, and her use of imaginary characters, such as her alter ego, Fatima Mayfield, that reflect her interest in African American identity. She has received awards from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. Her work is included in many institutional collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, The High Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Gallery of Art, The San Francisco Museum of Fine Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
