        Jun. 19, 2021

Cecil Stoughton, John F. Kennedy & Robert F. Kennedy, 1960s

        Est: $1,000 - $1,200

Cecil Stoughton, John F. Kennedy & Robert F. Kennedy, 1960s, C-print, 13" x 10.5", mounted 20" x 16". Artist Biography: Cecil W. Stoughton, who was President John F. Kennedy's White House photographer, whose photographs of JFK and his young, beautiful wife and children shared their personal lives with the American public, and who took the iconic photograph of Lyndon B. Johnson being sworn in as president aboard Air Force One in Texas after JFK's 1963 assassination, died at his home in Merritt Island, FL, on Monday. He was the personal photographer to presidents Kennedy and Johnson before the position had a formal name. Stoughton had a desk in the West Wing and when the president wanted a photograph, secretary Evelyn Lincoln would push a button sounding a buzzer in the photographer's office. He said he would then run upstairs as fast as he could because he knew the president would be standing "waiting for me." He was often summoned to take a picture of the president with a visiting head of state, or in Kennedy's case to make candid photographs of the president playing in the Oval Office with his children. Stoughton was a captain in the U.S. Army Signal Corps working in the Army's Public Information Office when his boss, Major General Chester Clifton, was picked to the be the military aide to the newly-elected President Kennedy. Stoughton told National Geographic magazine in an interview that Clifton told Kennedy that he was going to be "in the public eye" and needed a photographer in-house (one they could "control") to release photographs to the press. Kennedy and his wife, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, were charismatic and photographic and had captured the public's interest, unlike JFK's predecessor, General Dwight Eisenhower, who was elderly, Stoughton said, so until then there had been "no need" for a White House photographer. And Kennedy's youth and his relationship with his children were the popular subjects of Stoughton's photographs, pictures unlike anything the American public had seen from the White House. "Cecil was especially fond of a group of photographs, 12 in all, that he took in the Oval Office in October 1962," Life magazine photography editor Barbara Baker Burrows remembers. "Jackie was out of town, and Caroline and John John danced around the president's desk as he sang and clapped in delight. As much as any, when those pictures were published around the world, they helped create the aura that later came to be called Camelot," she said. When Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Stoughton was also riding in an open car in the motorcade and he heard three loud shots. Back on Air Force One as Johnson choreographed the swearing-in ceremony, Stoughton balanced atop a seat and got of 19 frames on two cameras as Johnson held his hand on JFK's personal Bible, surrounded by Jackie Kennedy on one side and Lady Bird Johnson on the other. As the plane's engines roared to pull away form the tramac three people ran down the stairs to stay in Texas, one of them Stoughton with his historic film. "I felt I had lost a brother," Stoughton told National Geographic. "He was only three years older than me, and I felt close to him, being that I was in the office with him, about ten feet away, every day. I think I probably missed him more than most." "For all the photographs Cecil took, the swearing-in clearly remains his most important – as a photograph, and as an historic document," Burrows said. "At a traumatic time, in a single photograph, Cecil provided the essential evidence of the continuity of government. In the confusion that followed the assassination, his photograph told the world that there was a new president, and the country that it was safe." Stoughton continued to work as a White House photographer under President Johnson for two more years after the assassination. After more than 26 years of military service he transfered to the National Park Service and worked as their chief still photographer until he retired a few weeks into the Nixon administration, working more than 31 years total in government service. Est: $2,400 - $2,600

JFK Assassinated - Successor LBJ Swearing-In Ceremony Aboard Air Force One, Original Photo Taken & Owned by Cecil Stoughton. Original vintage photograph of Lyndon B. Johnson's swearing-in ceremony on November 22, 1963, taken by and personally owned by JFK White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton (1920-2008). The glossy black and white print shows Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson at off-center, flanked by Jacqueline Kennedy at left and Lady Bird Johnson at right. Other recognizable figures include Federal Judge Sarah T. Hughes, who administered the oath, Texan Congressmen Albert Richard Thomas and Jack Brooks, among others. The reverse is numbered in orange pencil. Expected minor wear to corners and edges, else near fine. 10" x 8". This Cecil Stoughton photograph is in the collection of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum under accession number ST-1A-18-63. Stoughton took this photo, along with others, using a Hasselblad camera. He carefully positioned Jackie so that the blood-stained right side of her pink Chanel suit would not be visible. The presidential aircraft was parked at Love Field in Dallas while Jackie awaited the delivery of her husband's body, and while Johnson was sworn in. 27 people crammed into the unairconditioned airplane stateroom to witness the latter ceremony. Judge Hughes administered the presidential oath of office at 2:38 pm, using the dead president's bedside missal. Kennedy had been pronounced dead just 90 minutes earlier at Parkland Memorial Hospital. JFK Two Original First-Generation Photographs Taken by & Personally Owned by Cecil Stoughton 1963

        Est: $300 - $400

[John F. Kennedy] Golfing in Hyannis Port in July 1963, Original 1st Generation Photo Taken & Owned by Cecil Stoughton, JFK White House photographer (1920-2008). The reverse of each photograph is stamped and hand-inscribed in blue ball-point pen, as part of Stoughton's unique numbering and filing system. The double-weight, glossy color photographs printed on Kodak paper show President Kennedy and four golfing companions playing on the links of Hyannis Port Golf Club on the weekend of July 27-29, 1963. Slight curling, and with several tiny chips to edges, else in near fine condition. 7” x 5”. In the first photograph, JFK is shown walking on the golf course accompanied by, from left to right: Pierre Salinger (1925-2004), White House Press Secretary; David Ormsby-Gore (1918-1985), British ambassador to the United States and close Kennedy family friend; Charles F. Spaulding (1918-1999), whom Kennedy had befriended in his college days; and Kirk LeMoyne “Lem” Billings (1916-1981), Kennedy’s dear friend from Choate, and someone Joseph P. Kennedy considered as a “second son.” JFK is shown in the foreground, wearing a pale blue polo shirt, khaki pants, and a white leather glove. The second photograph shows JFK swinging the golf club, with Salinger, in a colorful patterned shirt, and Billings, in a striped polo, looking on. These photos were probably taken on July 27, 1963. Earlier that day, JFK had taken a walk along the beach with John F. Kennedy, Jr., sailed aboard the presidential yacht Honey Fitz, and swam with Caroline Kennedy and niece Maria Shriver. Cecil W. Stoughton filmed the weekend’s activities on 8mm frame film; the 14-minute-long silent short motion picture is part of the collection of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum (JFKPPP-35). Two still frames taken from Stoughton’s film (2:40 and 2:55) can be seen at the end of this lot’s images; they show different views of the five golfers. One of the reasons that Stoughton photographed and filmed Kennedy on the links that day was because Kennedy wanted celebrated professional golfer Arnold Palmer to review the footage. JFK was an excellent golfer--despite chronic back pain--but he had invited Palmer to the White House in December 1963 to receive some tips from the pro. Kennedy concealed his outstanding golfing ability from the American public during the first part of his presidency, because he didn’t want to further cultivate a silver-spoon image. The Hyannis Port Golf Club was an 18-hole private golf course designed by Scottish-born professional golfer and golf course architect Donald Ross and first opened in 1903. The Kennedy family were longtime club members since the club adjoined the Kennedy Compound. Less than ten days after this leisurely weekend at Hyannis Port, First Lady Jackie Kennedy delivered Patrick B. Kennedy prematurely. This would be the first of a series of tragic events that would occur that autumn, culminating in Kennedy’s November 1963 assassination. This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
