Otto Stotz (1805-1873), Painting 'Oriental Warrior', 1845

      Est: €4,800 - €6,000

Oil on canvas, relined Germany, 1845 Otto Stotz (1805-1873) - German painter Signed lower right 'O. Stotz' and dated 1845 Gilded stucco frame Overall dimensions, with frame: 135.5 x 184 cm Provenance: Swiss private collection A typical work of the horse painter Otto Stotz of impressive size This expressive painting of an oriental warrior was created by the German painter Otto Stotz in 1845. The fine monumental painting shows the sitter in an oriental costume, trying to subdue a prancing, wild stallion. This is a typical composition of the painter who, since 1841, presented to the public numerous depictions of race horses in Vienna. Many European painters of the 19th and early 20th Century dealt with the theme of the Orient, often depicted as a place of sensuality and decadence. The painting is signed lower right 'O. Stotz' and dated 1845. The canvas has been relined and is in parts restored, two vertical areas of retouching in the center and the right margin of the image are visible. A patch of canvas can be seen on the upper margin as well as several restored tears. The canvas is partly wavy, especially in the upper left area. The gilded stucco frame has some chips. The overall dimensions with frame are 135.5 x 84 cm. The stretcher frame measures 120 x 170 cm. Otto Stotz (1805-1873) The horse painter and lithographer Otto Stotz is documented between 1830 and 1840 in Stuttgart. Since 1840, he lived in Vienna. Since 1841, he presented his works at exhibitions of the Imperial and Royal Academy, especially portraits of race horses of the Imperial and Royal studs. Today, works by Otto Stotz are on display in major collections, including the Schönbrunn Palace, and the National gallery of Linz.
