          Oct. 22, 2024

Original American WWII 1944 Poster by Stoop - Careless Talk Got There First Parachute

          Est: $500 - $800

Herbert Morton Stoops paints a stark warning against "Careless Talk" in this graphic image from 1944. The grisly features of a paratrooper shot dead during an aerial battle are a stern reminder to the American public on the home-front to be mindful of what they say in public. During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard or intercepted by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. Herbert Morton Stoops (1888-1948) began his career as a staff artist for the San Francisco Chronicle. He enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago while working at the Chicago Tribune as an illustrator. His most notable body of illustrations and artwork was for the Blue Book, a literary pulp magazine. He served in World War I as a First Lieutenant and released a book of his illustrations shortly after end of the war. In New York, Stoops studied under Harvey Dunn and soon became a popular magazine artist, whose work appeared in Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping, as well as covers for the American Legion Magazine. During World War II he executed several posters for the office of War Information. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Herbert Morton Stoops, Connecticut, New York, California, Idaho (1888-1948), Davy Crockett, charcoal on paper

          Est: $300 - $500

Herbert Morton Stoops Connecticut, New York, California, Idaho, (1888-1948) Davy Crockett charcoal on paper Stoop rendered the famed frontiersman with his flintlock musket slung over his broad shoulders in a classic contrapposto pose that conjures Michelangelo's David. Crockett gazes into destiny with his ax in hand and a huge Bowie knife tucked into his belt. A tighty log cabin is bathed in sunlight behind him, you can almost hear the cry of a crow, and the rustling of dried leaves as he surveys his homestead. H. M. Stoops lived just over a decade longer that the famous Crockett. Stoop's died at the age of 61. Like Crockett he managed to pack a lot into his relatively short life. He made many oil paintings and hundreds of illustrations for magazines like Colliers, Cosmopolitan, and Good Housekeeping. But it's his powerful Blue Book covers that brought him his widest acclaim. Blue Book was a literary pulp magazine with a 70-year run, 1905 - 1975. Blue Book was especially beloved by young men for the stories of the old west, adventure, and war which were packed inside its fantastic covers. Stories by Edgar Burroughs, Agatha Christy, Max Brand, and Shelby Foote among many other important writers filled its pages. A historian noted that between the 1910s and the 1950s, "Blue Book achieved and sustained a level of excellence reached by few other magazines." Stoops's life seemed to be perfectly set up for the type of adventure illustration that made him renowned. He grew up in the fading light of the old west on a ranch in Idaho, where Indians, cowboys, and buffalo still roamed. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Stoops was a big powerful man known for his bear hugs and gregarious personality. He served in the army as a First Lieutenant in the Sixth Field Artillery during WWl. He saw the danger, he lived adventure, and he rendered what he knew. This combination is why he was inducted into The Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2009. I think Davy Crockett would approve of Herbert Stoops' drawing of him. It's confident and strong, it's relaxed and self-assured, just like the two men themselves. "Be always sure you are right, then go ahead." This is sound advice from Mr. Crockett, and I might add, when you see a good drawing on your own personal antique trail, go ahead and buy it, it just might broaden your path.
