His father was a well-known artist, as were several of his siblings, many of whom were primarily self-taught.Stoopendaal attended the Swedish Royal Academy of Fine Arts, located in Stockholm, from 1870 through 1878. There he joined a group of fellow students, including future painter and interior designer Carl Larsson, a future proponent of the arts and crafts movement in Sweden, who were opposed to new artistic trends, including impressionism. Stoopendaal was considered a talented student and before long opened his own studio in Stockholm. He eventually decided to try his hand at working in America, and alongside his younger sister, Ebba, younger brother, Georg, who was also an artist, and Georg's wife, Safia, he traveled to New York from Stockholm aboard the Thingvalla line steamer Norge in March of 1892. Upon his arrival in America, he first moved to Brooklyn, Long Island, where he resided in a small townhouse located at 337 11th Street. In New York City he found work as an illustrator for such publications as the New Illustrated Magazine while also teaching at the Shields School of Art, located at 154 Madison Avenue. By 1915 he was listed as still working in the city as an artist and residing in rented rooms on 5th Avenue between 30th and 31st Streets. Meanwhile, his sister, Ebba, had married a man named Charles Nichols and moved to Brooklyn, Long Island. Stoopendaal rejoined them there in his later years.Ferdinand Jakob Von Stoopendaal died in Brooklyn, Long Island, New York on Tuesday, July 15, 1930, just a few days before what would have been his 80th or 81st birthday. It is not known where his funeral service was held, nor where he was buried. Stoopendaal was a member of a number of arts related groups during his lifetime, including Artist's Association, the Artist's Club of Stockholm, and the Swedish Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He exhibited his works at major institutions in Sweden during his lifetime, and he may have exhibited at least once in America, in Rochester, New York, at Rundel's Gallery in 1898. His works are not known to be in any public institutions in America, however the Swedish Royal Academy of Fine Arts holds more than a hundred of his drawings. The largest number of his works reside in private collections throughout Europe and the United States.
