With handwritten dedication on the title page 'To Gust ... / great artist I dedicate/ this humble werk/ July 1936/ Sasha Stone'. In orig. grey linen portfolio, with ties. Mint condition. Of utmost scarcity as no complete copy appeared on the public market in over 20 years. Provenance: Private collection, Ghent. In 1933, Sasha Stone's portfolio 'Femmes' was published. This album contains 20 images of nudes. However, Stone was far from satisfied with the quality delivered, and the two subsequent portfolios 'Hommes' and 'Adolescents' were not to be published. He decided to issue another album shortly afterwards, this time with 25 original gelatin silver prints. Whereas the album 'Femmes' was published in Paris by 'Arts & Métiers Graphiques', his new portfolio will appear under his own name, 'Editions Internationales Stone'. The appearance of the album is almost spartan, with only the mention of his name on the top left of the rough linen cover. Once opened, however, a series of almost monumental images of female nudes with enormous sculptural appeal unfolds. By the way, he only wanted ordinary women in front of the lens, women he encountered on the street, not models. Although Stone (both Cami and Sasha) were counted among the cream of modern photographers in the late 1920s, included in every high-profile exhibition at the time, they have largely had to give up that leadership position today. His premature death, during his flight to freedom in 1940, the lack of an archive (a few years ago, a collection worthy of the name did turn up in a rather small French auction house), these are all parts of why Stone no longer rings many bells. The fact that he is rather sparsely represented in the collections of large worldwide museums will also have contributed to that. However, Sasha and Cami Stone were both included in the recent important MoMa exhibition 'Object: Photo/ Modern Photography/ The Thomas Walther Collection 1909-1949', and its accompanying publication. Hij wilde trouwens alleen gewone vrouwen voor de lens, vrouwen die hij tegenkwam op straat, geen modellen. Hoewel Stone (zowel Cami als Sasha) in de late jaren '20 gerekend werden bij het kruim van de moderne fotografen, ze opgenomen werden in elke spraakmakende expositie van toen, hebben ze die koppositie vandaag de dag grotendeels moeten opgeven. Zijn vroegtijdige dood, tijdens zijn vlucht naar de vrijheid in 1940, het ontbreken van een archief (enkele jaren geleden dook er wel een collectie die naam waardig op in een eerder klein Frans veilinghuis), het zijn allemaal deeltjes geweest van het waarom dat Stone niet meer belletjes doet rinkelen. Ook het feit dat hij eerder spaarzaam vertegenwoordigd is in de collecties van grote mondiale musea, zal daartoe bijgedragen hebben. In leaves under grey paper folder, title ill. with a photograph (scratches on the illustration, spine and flaps with tears and sl. splitting). First edition, complete with 22 photographs reproduced on 20 plates, including the title mounted on the folder. Sasha Stone (1895-1940), Russian-born photographer, worked in Berlin, then founded with his Belgian wife Cami, the Studio Stone in Brussels in 1931. After his divorce in 1939 he founded a new studio, but fled Belgium in May 1940 and died from disease in France, on 6 August. In 1933, the French magazine "Arts et métiers graphiques" published this collection of studies of female nudes, as the first in a series of three planned portfolios on the human body. The other two, "Hommes" and "Adolescents", were never executed.
