DOUG STONEUNTITLED (RED, BLACK AND WHITE)acrylic on canvasdated 1995 on gallery label on the stretcher 38 ins x 44 ins; 96.5 cms x 111.8 cms Provenance:Christopher Cutts Gallery, TorontoNote:Doug Stone, a multidisciplinary artist from Simcoe, Ontario, creates artwork from a variety of mediums all providing a glimpse into his biography and memory. From furniture design to mixed media collages of commonplace objects documenting his everyday life, the artist invites the viewer into a world of personal intimacy and symbolism. In his practice, Stone is fascinated with deconstructing culture and meaning through material objects, lurking through yard sales and flea markets in search of inspiration. Ultimately however, it is his own personal life experiences which give much of his work meaning. His struggle with AIDS in the 1980s and subsequent near death experience in 1995 can be seen in Untitled (Red, Black and White) (1995). Darkness invades the canvas, as if devouring the handwritten scrawls of his memory. The viewer is left wondering what prevents this darkness from ever prevailing. Stone's work in various mediums are original and stand on their own merit. Yet altogether, they represent a true portrait of the artist. Deeply autobiographical, his vulnerability enables him to connect to elements of many human experiences such as hope and life, anger and death. The result is art which is ultimately passionate, sincere, and intensely emotional.Stone lives and works both in Toronto and New York City.

DOUGLAS STONEA SET OF 4 TWOMBLY, print on paper; signed, dated '92, numbered 10/25 9 ins x 9 ins; 22.9 cms x 22.9 cms Note: Doug Stone was born in Simcoe, Ontario, in 1951 and graduated from the University of Guelph, Ontario, in 1974 with an Honors Bachelor of Fine Arts. In the late 1970's, Stone ran a high-tech furniture store in Toronto, and in the 1980's was renowned in the city for his innovative furniture design. Towards the end of the 80's, Stone battled AIDS, and was hospitalized for a period of time. When he recovered from his near-death experience, he turned to painting as a means of documenting battle, in particular the isolation that results from illness. The works that were shown at the Christopher Cutts Gallery in Toronto in 1996 are an autobiographical account of his experience.

DOUGLAS STONE, GLASS BEAD GAME, signed and dated /93, 32" x 32" - 80 x 80 cm.Note: Canadian artist Douglas Stone's work often "blurs the definition of painting with an immediacy and intimacy of mark-making and found objects." Through an evocative use of symbolism, many of his powerful works read as a seemingly personal iconography. Much of Stone's most recent body of work is based on figurative drawing and is largely inspired by natural landscapes. Stone's oeuvre, which is considerably varied and complex, increasingly includes new media, including photography. After many years away, Stone has recently returned to his work as a professional artist; he was the subject of an exciting and successful exhibition at Toronto's Al Green Gallery in 2010.
