William Anders was born October 17, 1933, in Hong Kong, the son of a U.S. Navy officer. After attending school in San Diego County, California, he followed in his father's footsteps and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1955 with a degree in electrical engineering. From there, Anders entered pilot training in the U.S. Air Force, earned a Master's Degree in nuclear engineering and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. NASA then selected Anders for the Apollo program in 1963. On December 21, 1968, astronauts Anders, Frank Borman and James Lovell became the first men to escape the Earth's gravity and orbit the moon aboard the Apollo 8 spacecraft. This mission brought to Earth its first close-up view of the lunar surface, the moon's far side and, perhaps most importantly, paved the way for man's first footsteps on the moon. Less than a year after this momentous mission, Anders served as back-up pilot for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing. He later left NASA to serve in a number of prestigious positions in both the public and private sectors. Image Size: 18 x 21.25 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B12667)

Seeking new territories to add to its East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, Japan inched island by island toward its ultimate goal -- Australia. New Guinea, the second largest island in the world, loomed wide on Japan's covetous horizon as a possible launch site for its Australian campaign. On March 8, the invasion of New Guinea commenced. Amphibious landings on Huon Gulf's coastal airfields dispatched Japanese troops which moved toward Port Moresby, a southern outpost only 300 miles from Australia's northern coast. The Japanese met only token ground resistance but ultimately failed to achieve their goal. A bolstered Allied air and ground offensive ultimately ensured the reconquest of New Guinea and blocked Japan's territorial expansion in the South Pacific. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Federal Hall in New York City circa 1780" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S. 22c Drafting the Bill of Rights stamp issued September 25, 1989. The cry of freedom that rang through the first thirteen American colonies in the late 1780's was not carried by a single voice. It was the utterance of many separate voices, all crying for liberty. Yet many were uncertain just what liberty would mean, or how long it would last, and were hesitant to put their trust in a new administration. Post-revolutionary Americans wanted a guarantee that their national government would never turn against the premise it was founded on -- individual freedom. Thus, ten amendments to the Constitution listing specific basic freedoms and procedural safeguards were adopted. The amendments, called the Bill of Rights, specify freedoms and protections that are the core of American civil liberty and affirm that the individual may never be deprived by governmental power. This artwork shows Federal Hall in New York City, where America's First Congress drafted the Bill of Rights. Image Size: 15.25 x 21.25 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B12146)

ART SIZE: 18 x 25 inches / 45 x 63 cm BOARD SIZE: 24 x 27 inches / 60 x 68 cm SIGNATURE: lower right NOTE: This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Invasion of Anzio 1944 stamp issued January 22, 1994. By the end of 1943, the Allied advance into Italy had virtually come to a halt. In an effort to prevent their enemies from waging an assault on Rome, the occupying German forces held a defensive position known as the Gustav Line. The invasion of Anzio became the focal point of operation SHINGLE -- an Allied plan to outflank the German line. On January 22, 1944, the U.S. Army's 6th Corps landed on the Italian town's shores. Within a few days, about 70,000 men and 18,000 vehicles were in place. However, the invading forces remained on Anzio's beaches instead of heading to Rome. The Allied troops were soon faced with a relentless barrage of German artillery and aircraft fire. Allied forces suffered a casualty rate of almost 25 percent before they ultimately took Rome. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Frederic A. Bartholdi stamp issued July 18, 1985. Standing proud and silent over New York Harbor is the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of international friendship ... and Americans owe its design to the French sculptor Fredric Auguste Bartholdi. Originally planned to be given to the United States by the people of France in 1876 -- the date marking one hundred years of American independence -- Lady Liberty was not completed and presented to the United States until 1885. The spirit of the Statue had originated in 1865 when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. Lincoln had been a living symbol of liberty for the French people. Greatly affected by the tragedy, the French nation took up a collection ... and a gold medal was sent to Mrs. Lincoln with the message: "Tell Mrs. Lincoln that in this little box is the heart of France." But the friendship between the French and American people did not die with Lincoln and the French people felt a monument should be erected in the United States to symbolize that living friendship. It was then that Bartholdi was commissioned to travel to America and decide what kind of monument should be made. The model Bartholdi finally created succeeded in expressing the friendship of his nation. Portraying Lady Liberty uplifting the lamp of freedom, the statue was entitled Liberte Eclairant le Monde, or Liberty Enlightening the World. Erected upon an American-built pedestal on Liberty Island, Bartholdi's masterpiece -- the Statue of Liberty -- stands as a symbol of Franco-American friendship. Image Size: 20.75 x 17.75 in. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Battle of Stalingrad 1942 stamp issued August 23, 1992. Before Stalingrad, Germany ran roughshod over all of Europe. After it, German armies continued to run -- but generally back to the Fatherland. Hitler's massive 6th Army, which had crushed Holland and Belgium, arrived at the fortified city of Stalingrad in August. A five-month siege followed, with Russians fighting Germans street to street, house to house. Then the brutal Russian winter began to take its toll on the Axis forces. In the end, their supply lines cut off, 94,000 surviving Germans surrendered. The rest had fallen victim to biting cold and the equally lethal bite of Russian steel. Image Size: 24.25 x 15.5 in. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Japanese Land on New Guinea 1942 stamps issued March 8, 1992. Image Size: 15.5 x 24.75 in. Unframed. (B12667)

In 1801, the gifted Jefferson became the young nation's third President. During his first term, he acquired the Louisiana Territory for America. Unfortunately, the accomplishments of his second term were overshadowed by his controversial Embargo Act of 1807 which curtailed trade with England and France. At age sixty-six, President Jefferson retired to concentrate his talents on building the University of Virginia, perhaps in his own mind his greatest accomplishment. On July 4, 1826 -- the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence -- Thomas Jefferson died. Image Size: 21.25 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 27.25 x 24.25 in. Unframed. (B08207)

The confrontation began when an American regiment, escorted by several warships, was sent to reinforce Allied positions on the island. The Japanese sent their own armada to counter the American move. In the beginning, the Ardennes offensive went well for the German army. By December 17, General Hasso-Eccard von Manteuffel's forces had decimated the U.S. 110th infantry regiment outside Bastogne. U.S. General Troy H. Middleton responded by sending his reserve tanks to halt the Germans. Although they, too, were overwhelmed, their sacrifice prevented an early German breakthrough into Bastogne. On December 18, more reinforcements arrived. Tanks of the U.S. 3rd Army were joined by men of the 101st Airborne Division, commanded by Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe. The beleaguered Americans formed a defensive arc around Bastogne. On December 26, General George Patton's tanks broke through the German lines and linked up with McAuliffe's men to turn the tide of battle. Image Size: 22 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 27 x 23.75 in. Guam had been an American possession for more than 40 years before World War II. Taking it back from the Japanese would provide more air bases within range of the home islands. On the morning of July 21, 1944, after a prolonged U.S. naval bombardment, Major General Allen H. Turnage's 3rd Marine Division hit the beach west of Agana. That same day, the U.S. 1st Provisional Marine Brigade, under Brigadier General Lemuel C. Shepherd, attacked south of the Orote Peninsula. Fighting was savage, much of it with bayonets, in difficult, swampy terrain. The battle for Guam lasted until August 10. Of about 19,000 Japanese defenders, only 1,250 were taken prisoner. Two Japanese soldiers surrendered on Guam as late as 1967, another in 1972. Image Size: 16.25 x 25.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 26.75 in. Unframed. (B14734)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 30c USS Reuben James stamp issued October 31, 1991. On October 23, 1941, the USS Reuben James departed from Newfoundland to join five other American destroyers serving as convoy escorts for British merchant vessels. In the early morning hours of October 31, a surfaced German U-boat spotted the convoy and transmitted the news of its find to other subs in the area. Ordered to locate the source of the transmissions, the Reuben James increased speed and swerved to port -- just as the U-562 fired two torpedoes. One sped harmlessly aside; the other caught the venerable destroyer below the bridge, splitting the ship in half and igniting the forward magazine. The vessel sank within five minutes, and one hundred fifteen men -- two-thirds of its crew -- perished. The USS Reuben James thus became the first American warship lost in the Battle of the Atlantic. The stamp on this First Day Cover was released by the Post Office in honor of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the first meeting of the Senate. Though the idea for the Senate originated during the Constitutional Convention in 1787, it actually began work in 1789 after ratification of the Constitution. Made up of two Senators from each state, the first Senate convened with only twenty-two members, as two of the original thirteen states had yet to ratify the Constitution. The Constitution provides that a Senator must be thirty years of age, have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine years, and be a resident of the state from which he or she is elected. Traditionally, a Senator is also from a wealthy background, is well educated, likely to be a lawyer, and even more likely a veteran. His or her position in the government, coupled with the structure of the Senate itself, provides a Senator considerable power. The Senate has a complex organizational makeup, relying on committees and subcommittees to process legislation. Each Senator may serve on various committees and virtually every Senator is chairman of at least a subcommittee. Thus, a Senator is likely to influence the decisions made in a number of different committees and subcommittees. This affords him or her the opportunity to be a spokesperson for the Senate as a whole on issues handled in his or her committees. Image Size: 17.75 x 21 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 29c Fall of Wake Island 1941 stamp issued December 23, 1991. A key in Japan's grand plan to pummel the United States into submission, Wake Island first came under attack by Japanese forces only hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Although out-numbered, the gallant defenders were determined to hold their positions at any cost and Japan's initial thrust was repelled. A few days later, a formation of Japanese Mitsubishi G3M2 "Nell" bombers was greeted in the skies by four Grumman Wildcat fighters, the last of what had been a dozen airplanes on Wake. Below, Marines fired anti-aircraft guns. Repulsing the Japanese once again. The fight for the island would continue for several more weeks until the Japanese launched a massive invasion force which quickly overran the war-weary American troops. On December 23, 1941, the defenders reluctantly capitulated. Image Size: 15.75 x 24.75 in. Overall Size: 23.75 x 27 in. Unframed. (B13453)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22c Frederic A. Bartholdi stamp issued July 18, 1985. Standing proud and silent over New York Harbor is the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of international friendship .. and Americans owe its design to the French sculptor Fredric Auguste Bartholdi. Greatly affected by the tragedy, the French nation took up a collection .. and a gold medal was sent to Mrs. The battle of Cape Esperance was one of several naval engagements between American and Japanese forces during their bitter struggle at Guadalcanal. The confrontation began when an American regiment, escorted by several warships, was sent to reinforce Allied positions on the island. The Japanese sent their own armada to counter the American move. Losses on both sides were light during the engagement, but the Japanese were able to reinforce their own positions on the island, raising the total number of troops there to 55,000 -- 22,000 Japanese against 23,000 Americans. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 50c Battle of the Bulge 1944 - Infantry stamp issued December 16, 1994. At 5:30 on the morning of December 16, 1944, secretly-massed German artillery opened fire on the thinly spread American defenders in the Ardennes. Operation "Watch on the Rhine" -- the Third Reich's last desperate gamble to save itself by forcing the Western Allies to make peace -- had begun. When the four-hour bombardment ended, German infantry and tanks, led by SS General Josef Dietrich, began advancing through the woods and hills of the Ardennes. The German advance against the badly outnumbered Americans created a 50-mile "bulge" in the Allied lines. The Americans battled back doggedly, however, and by early January the fight turned against the Germans. By the end of January German forces had been all but destroyed and the "bulge" squeezed out of existence. Image Size: 23.75 x 14.5 in. Overall Size: 27 x 23.75 in. Unframed. (B14874)

The idea for the House of Representatives, as with its counterpart, the Senate, was born in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention. After ratification of the Constitution in 1789, the House began work with sixty-five members. The stamp featured on this First Day Cover commemorates the Two Hundredth Anniversary of the House, which by 1913 had grown to four hundred thirty-five members. Traditionally, the House has remained at that number, with the exception of a temporary expansion in 1959. At that time, Hawaii and Alaska became states, and two extra members were temporarily added to represent them in the House. Representatives are apportioned to states on the basis of population, and are reapportioned after each census to maintain a fair distribution. A Representative must be at least twenty-five years old, have been a citizen of the United States for seven years, and be a resident of the state that he or she is representing. Representatives conduct business in committees and subcommittees. The three most important committees are Ways and Means, Appropriations, and Rules, handling tax measures, funding for government agencies and the flow of business on the House floor, respectively. The House processes ten to fifteen thousand bills annually and helps enact a large number of public and private laws each year. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Shapers of America Collection produced throughout 1986 and 1987. The son of a British financier who headed the Morgan Bank in London, young John Pierpont Morgan entered the financial arena almost as a matter of course, early demonstrating a genius for what was the "family business." Barely 30 years old, he successfully fought off the attempt of two "Robber Barons" -- Jim Fisk and Daniel Drew -- to take over the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad which he served as agent. Affiliating with his father's banking house soon after, he became the most powerful American banker since Stephen Girard. By 1880 he had won a commanding position through consolidation of the railroads and the formation of giant "trusts." A pioneer in replacing bonds with stocks -- thus transferring the risks from the corporation to the investors -- his policy was to install members of his own bank on the boards of other corporations. Ultimately, he refused to deal with, or invest in, corporations on any other terms. Morgan's greatest financial coup was the organization of the U.S. Steel Corporation in 1901. By that time his dominant position in scores of industries caused him to exert a powerful influence on the national economy. Thus Morgan became a symbol of the "Money Trust." J.P. Morgan donated some of his money to public and quasi-public purposes. He built an imposing collection of paintings, furniture, sculpture, and enamels and willed them to the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, while the Morgan Library in New York stands as a monument to his philanthropy. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood John W. Young Commemorative Cover postmarked March 11, 1995. Considered to be one of America's most experienced space travelers, astronaut John Watts Young has made six different NASA flights. Young's first space mission, Gemini 3, was made with veteran astronaut Gus Grissom on March 23, 1965. The following year, Young and Michael Collins teamed up on Gemini 10, in which they rendezvoused with two Agena spacecraft and set a record altitude of 475 miles. In May 1969, as command module pilot for Apollo 10, Young orbited in Charlie Brown while his fellow crewmen took the lunar module Snoopy to within 10 miles of the Moon -- a mission that served as a dress rehearsal for the first actual lunar landing in July. Three years later, Young finally set foot on the Moon himself when he commanded Apollo 16. Traveling nearly 17 miles in a lunar rover, he and Charles Duke spent three days on the Moon's surface setting up experiments and collecting over 200 pounds of Moon rocks. On April 12, 1981 -- exactly 20 years after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space -- Young made his fifth NASA flight. Together with Robert Crippen, he flew on the premier mission in NASA's Space Shuttle program. From November 28 to December 8, 1983, Young commanded his second Shuttle mission, STS-9, which brought his total hours in space to 835. Commenting about his illustrious career during an interview, Young once stated, "I can't think of another single job I'd rather have -- in this world or out of it. Image Size: 18.5 x 20.75 in.
