          Kirk Stirnweis Western Genre Illustration

          Est: $300 - $500

Painting by American artist Kirk Stinweis (1967 - ), a New York/Connecticut native who later moved west (that influence is certainly evident here). Signed and dated in work (1984). Oil on canvas. Artwork measures approximately 19 1/2" wide and 15 1/2" high and is in fine condition. There appears to be an errant brush stroke that could be mistaken as damage, rising above a plateau in the image's distant background. Not inspected out of frame. Wooden frame measures approximately 23 1/2" wide, 19 1/2" high and 1 3/4" deep and is likewise in fine condition. A GotArt? biography of the artist has been affixed on verso. Keywords: cowboy, gunslinger, revolver, art, American West, Revolver

SIGHT SIZE: 13 x 18 inches / 33 x 45 cm BOARD SIZE: 18 x 22 inches / 45 x 55 cm SIGNATURE: lower left NOTE: This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Luna Moth issued on June 13, 1987. Appropriately named after the Roman goddess of the Moon, the Luna Moth is one of the most beautiful insects indigenous of North America. Large and graceful, the Luna Moth is a member of the Saturniidae, or silk worm family. Their pale green wings, with a small eye-like dot near the center, span more than four in. A normal year may have one or two generations of Luna Moths successfully bred. Females place their eggs among dead plants so the tiny caterpillars, once hatched, will find themselves on or near their very first meal. Partaking mostly of Sweet Gum, Hickory, Walnut and Persimmon leaves, the caterpillars grow, shedding each warty skin as it gets too tight. When fully grown and the tim is right, this intricate larva spins a silk-like cocoon. Inside, it is somewhat active while its body changes form. When the adult is ready, she emerges as a moth. Her frame is soft at first, her wings yet small and limp. Hanging so that they might dry, the Luna Moth takes her final form. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Scarlet Tanager issued on June 13, 1987. The brilliant Scarlet Tanager male enlivens the summer scenery with lush, flame red feathers perfectly accented by the sooty black of its wings and tail. These beautiful birds spend much of their time in the very tops of trees high above the forest floor. There they move freely, though rather sluggishly, in search of berries and the leaf-eating insects on which they dine. Because of their preference for lofty heights, Scarlet Tanagers are seldom seen except when lured by cool, clean water for bathing. Aside from these rare appearances on the ground, this striking bird's presence is generally marked only by its melodic song. A bit husky in tone, the Tanager's call has been described as sounding like "a robin with a sore throat." Nonetheless, it is a song which gladdens those who listen for it. Come fall, the Scarlet Tanager molts, exchanging his brilliant summer plumage for the olive-green coloring of his mate. Then it is time to join the flock as they migrate, under the cover of darkness, to the warmer climates of South America. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B10716)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Monarch Butterfly issued on June 13, 1987. Monarch Butterflies are perhaps the best known and most familiar butterflies in North America. All summer long, Monarch Butterflies are seen basking in the warm sunshine. As they take flight, their orange and black wings glow brightly against the sky. Monarchs do not fear attacks by birds as many butterflies do, for they are protected by an acrid odor which causes potential predators to avoid them. As summer turns to autumn, Monarchs gather together for their long journey south. They fly thousands of miles to Mexico - enabling them to survive the winter. The colorful autumn travelers look like a mantle of orange and gold moving across the countryside as they make their way south. Later, with the coming of spring, the Monarch Butterflies will again head north to complete their amazing migratory cycle. Looking somewhat faded, the female Monarchs search out milkweed plants so they can lay their eggs. Milkweed is the sole food source for Monarch Butterfly young. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Badger issued on June 13, 1987. Snorting, snuffling, and waddling from place to place, the Badger is a curious creature seldom "badgered" by anyone. Preferring the solitary life, this mammal spends much of its time in burrows, away from the eyes of man and other predators. Using long, curved claws, the Badger can quickly dig itself out of sight in the dry, open lands it inhabits. A Badger's digging is also a way of retrieving food and or storing it, getting out of the summer sun for a nap, or preparing a winter home. Indeed, the Badger spends much of its life simply digging holes. The adult is about three feet long and can weigh up to twenty-five pounds. Its short, stocky body and long side hairs trailing the ground give it an unmistakable, almost amusing, silhouette as it moves about the western plains. But pound for pound, Badgers are some of the scrappiest fighters when cornered. Their fur bristles up, making them appear much larger; their sharp claws become a weapon backed by powerful jaws and strong teeth. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 22.25 in. Unframed. (B10783)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Iiwi issued on June 13, 1987. In the cool, moist early morning calm of Mauna Loa or Mauna Kea rain forest, a startling cacophonous cry breaks the calm. The tiny Iiwi has awaken. Dramatically colored with vibrant black and red plumage and white underwings, the Iiwi is a member of the Honey Creeper family, found only in the upland of the Hawaiian Islands - usually between three thousand and five thousand feet. In addition to its stark coloration, the Iiwi can be identified by its strong, downwardly curved beak. This long beak permits the Iiwi to sip nectar from even deep, bell-shaped flowers which it does not have to stab to feed. Its favorite food flower is the sophora tree, and Iiwis may feed only on nectar. After feeding, the lone Iiwi seeks the shelter of the rain forest canopy. Calling while in flight as well as when settled, the Iiwi utters a sharp croak which is only rarely repeated to form a song. Iiwis can be distinguished by their musk-like scent, which is characteristic of most Honey Creepers. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B11028)

Kirk Stirnweis (Colorado, New Hampshire, B. 1967) "Bobwhite Quail" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Bobwhite Quail issued on June 13, 1987. The Bobwhite is one of North America's best known gamebirds. Identified by their characteristic "bob-White" call, these birds are well camouflaged with a mixture of brown, black, buff and white plumage. They are quite plentiful and widespread east of the Rockies and south into Guatemala and Cuba. Bobwhites thrive in open, unforested areas, at the edge of woodlands and expecially near farmland where crop residues provide an easily accessible food source during winter. In summer, insects are eaten along with a wide assortment of seeds, wild fruits and tender green plants. From fall through spring, Bobwhites live in small flocks called "coveys". At night the members roost together in snug circles for warmth, shoulder to shoulder, heads pointing outward, tails held toward the center. Thus, should they be alarmed, they can fly out in all directions. In spring, as the conveys disperse, each male selects a territory in which to nest. Females build the nest and lay twelve to fifteen eggs per clutch. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B10957)

Kirk Stirnweis (B. 1967) "Bobcat" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c Bobcat issued on June 13, 1987. Resembling a common house cat, the Bobcat hunts silently by night through the forests, swamplands, mountains, and deserts of North America. However, this resemblance is only superficial. The Bobcat - named for his characteristically stubby, blak-tipped tail - is a powerful feline weighing some twenty pounds, standing fifteen in tall, and measuring about two feet in length. Its stealth and cunning have earned the Bobcat a reputation as an extraordinary hunter. His shy nature is underscored by the fact that the Bobcat hunts, and usually lives, alone. Bobcat dens are generally found among the rocks and caves or even in hollow logs. Here, the female gives birth to her young, nursing them for two months. Soon, she is leading them on forays into the night, teaching them the ways of the species. Fluffy and playful, the kittens learn quickly the serious side of life in the wild, and by the age of one year, they are ready to go out on their own. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 21.75 in. Unframed. (B10908)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c California Sea Lion issued on June 13, 1987. Flexible and streamlined, these playful mammals - often mistakenly called seals - are the circus stars most widely known for their acrobatic performances in marine shows throughout the country. In the wild, however, California Sea Lions live off the rocky Pacific coasts of central North America, as well as around the Galapagos Islands off South America. Enjoying more moderate climates, they live in areas where rising warm currents carry nutrients to the surface. The current's action allows them to search shallow waters for fish, squid, octopus, and abalone - taking their catch with a quick and powerful bite-shake-and-swallow action. Most Sea Lion behavior is accompanied by a variety of vocalizations. Males - called bulls - bark, females (cows) howl, and their furry brown pups produce a sort of bleating sound. Sea Lions are distinguished from true seals by their ears and by their use of their foreflippers as the principle means of propulsion through the water. They are also generally larger than true seals and have blunter snouts. Image Size: 13.5 x 18.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 22.5 in. Unframed. (B11088)

Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card of the 22c American Lobster issued on June 13, 1987. Living on the rocky, sandy bottoms, from the New England shoreline to the edge of the continental shelf, the American Lobster is an elusive quarry for fishermen. Lobsters dwell alone in crevices or in burrows under rocks. They are nocturnal, foraging at night for fish, algae, eel grass, or invertebrates. Like most arthropods, American Lobsters cannot grow without shedding their hard shells. Youngsters molt several times a year, but after reaching maturity, females molt only once every other year, while males do so annually. Molting is important in their reproductive cycle as well. For, mating can only take place within a few hours after the female has shed her shell. The female carries the fertilized eggs for several months before they are ready to hatch. Newly hatched Lobsters are free swimming and pass through three stages of development in about twelve days. During the fourth stage, they begin to look for a place to settle, and the the fifth stage they are ready to molt and spend the rest of their lives foraging on the ocean floor.
