William Alexander (1726-1783) was an American heir to a Scottish peerage and a major general in the Revolutionary War. His father had been exiled from Scotland in 1715 and complications in differing inheritance laws in Scotland and England kept the Earldom of Stirling in dispute throughout Alexander's life. While his claim was never fully recognized by the House of Lords, he continued to style himself as Lord Stirling for the latter half of his life. He was placed in command of the 1st Maryland Regiment at the Battle of Long Island and was responsible for holding off a British advance long enough for the Continental forces to retreat to safety. Stirling was taken prisoner at the engagement but quickly exchanged and promoted to major general. Stirling used Elizabethtown as his base to monitor the British forces in New York City throughout the winter of 1778 while raising additional militia troops to aid in the defense of the state. In December 1778, General Washington illustrated his great trust in Stirling by placing him in command of the Continental Army until February 1779, while Washington met with Congress in Philadelphia to discuss plans for the following year's campaigns. He died of illness in January 1783, just months before the end of the war. John Armstrong, Sr. (1717-1795) was a veteran of the French and Indian War who led the Kittanning Expedition in 1756. During the American Revolution, he was commissioned brigadier general of the Pennsylvania militia. Armstrong eventually transferred to the Continental Army and participated in the battles of Germantown and Brandywine. Failing health forced him to resign in 1778, after which he was elected to the Pennsylvania Assembly from 1779 to 1780. Francis Locke Sr. (1722-1796) was an Irish-born lawyer and politician. The family initially emigrated to Pennsylvania but relocated to Rowan County, North Carolina by 1753, where he served as the county's sheriff and coroner. During the American Revolution, he commanded a regiment of North Carolina militia and participated in the battles of Brier Creek, Colson's Mill and the sie
