Clyfford Still Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1904 - d. 1980

(b Grandin, ND, 1904) American Painter. Clifford E. Still received his BFA from the Spokane University in 1933. Still had his first solo show at the San Franciso Museum of Art in 1943. At the show, Still met Mark Rothko, who would become his friend and influence his work. While in New York, Rothko introduced him to Peggy Guggenheim, who gave him a solo show at her gallery, Art of the Century, in 1946. Still moved to San Fancisco where he taught and developed Abstract Expressionism with Rothko. After several years, Still moved back to New York where, in the early 1950’s, he would sever ties with the art world and from then on rarely exhibit his work. Upon leaving the art world, Still moved to Maryland, where he continued to paint until his death in 1980. After Still passed away, it was discovered that he had created and retained over 2000 pieces of work. A competition was held to decide which U.S. city would be allowed to house this abundant collection. Denver won the honor and revealed the Clifford Still Museum in early 2009.

        Clyfford Still (American, 1904-1980), , PH-491

        Est: $50,000 - $80,000

Clyfford Still (American, 1904-1980) PH-491 Signed and dated 1943 bottom right, inscribed 'PH-491' and dated verso, oil on paper. 20 x 13 in. (50.8 x 33cm) Unframed. provenance: Collection of Mrs. Patricia A. Still. Private Collection, Maryland (gifted directly from the above circa 1998). note: This lot is accompanied by a letter of gift signed by Mrs. Patricia A. Still. Prominent Abstract Expressionist painter, Clyfford Still spent his entire artistic career drawing and experimenting with different printing techniques, in addition to producing the large-scale oil paintings for which he is best known. His drawings held a particularly personal and privileged position for Still, and were only shown twice in exhibition during his lifetime; he once called his pastel drawings "a visual diary of a personal world." [1] Rather than sketches for larger paintings, Still's drawings constitute fully realized works in their own right, and provide a window into his working process. PH-491 is one of nearly one hundred oils on paper from a prolific period of Still's life, while he held a professorship at the Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). Not a formal "series," the works from this 1943-45 period display a diversity in composition, as the artist shifts back and forth between representational and abstract forms, leaving traces of the figure, landscape and nature as he experiments with abstraction. PH-491 shows Still's deliberate brushstrokes and extended undulating lines as he explored the interplay of paint and white space. Still's drawings were meticulously archived and stored by the artist, and later by his widow Patricia Still, and many were eventually donated to the Clyfford Still Museum, which she helped found in Denver, Colorado before her death in 2005. The present work was a gift from Mrs. Still to her long-time attorney and his wife, jointly, as noted in her hand-written letter of gift. My feeling of freedom was now absolute and infinitely exhilarating.'' Clyfford Still, 1963 In statements about his work, Still referred to painting as an ``instrument'' and believed that art was a total idea, encompassing life and death, freedom and subjugation. Still saw art as influential in society and it was the artist's responsibility to use the instrument of paint as a confrontation with his inner self and with society as a whole. Like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, Still considered art to have a transformative potential that could impact the public in transcendent and deeply emotive ways. Still sought to achieve the ecstatic through primal forms that abandoned the human figure as subject matter, leaving the human gesture of paint to signify the human presence in art. In the mid-1940s, with works such as Untitled (Fear), Still arrived at his unique mature style of abstraction that achieved a fusion of color and form that aimed at momentous content and sublime beauty. By eliminating figuration or narrative intent from his compositions, Still orchestrated his strokes and surfaces toward his real subject matter, which is the dramatic interaction of painted forms and color harmonies. His jutting forms and muscular shards of color are redolent with a sense of crescendo within an organic formation that fills the picture plane and intimates a continuation beyond. Still's forms and painterly expression were in perfect sync with his foreboding and unusual palette. Still, in an acknowledgement of Edmund Burke's theory of color, employed melancholic colors such as black, brown or deep purple to access the Sublime, yet he also knew the value of expanding his palette to include the lighter colors of orange, red or yellow to animate the composition and increase its expressiveness. In Untitled (Fear), the counterpoints of color - the flickering red, touch of blue, outlines of white and wisps of yellow - harmonize with the more somber ground, and fulfill the artist's intent to highlight the paradox of light within dark in which radiance is a means of revelation of the Sublime.
