ALFRED STIEGLITZ (1864-1946) Spring Showers -- The Street-Cleaner. 1900-01. Platinum print, the image measuring 5½x2 inches (14x5 cm.), flush mounted. Provenance Ex-Collection Nancy Newhall Taken on Madison Avenue near 23rd Street, the image reflects Stieglitz's interest in the tonal effects produced by making photographs in rain or snow. The Alfred Stieglitz Key Set at the National Gallery of Art includes the photogravure and silver print examples of this image (numbers 269, 270, 271, and 272), but not a platinum print. It is alternatively titled Street Sweeper--Little Tree. Rather than depicting a bustling, hectic urban environment, Stieglitz's composition of the small figure of the worker juxtaposed with the fenced tree seems to convey something of a fragile balance between people, nature, and the rapidly changing urban setting.

Note: Alfred Stieglitz became interested in African sculpture after being introduced to it in 1909 by the artist Max Weber. In 1914, Stieglitz organized an exhibition titled "Statuary in Wood by African Savages - The Root of Modern Art" at the 291 Galleries in New York. It was the first exhibition in the U.S. focused entirely on African artifacts as fine art. Stieglitz scholar and curator Sarah Greenough attributes this photograph to Stieglitz, in connection with this exhibit. PROVENANCE: Private Nashville collection; acquired from the direct descendant of Ida O'Keefe's business manager. STIEGLITZ, ALFRED (1864–1946) [The Steerage, 1907]. Large-format photogravure on Japanese tissue, image 10 1/2 x 13 1/8 inches (264 x 330 mm), sheet size 15 7/8 x 11 inches, as printed in 1915 for insertion into a deluxe example of issue 7-8 of the magazine 291, published September-October 1915. Framed. Stieglitz's classic image was the only photogravure to appear in 291 during its brief period of publication. It had earlier appeared as a photogravure in Camera Work 36, 1911, in a smaller 7 1/2 x 6 inch format. A defining image in the history of photography, it was first praised by the painter Max Weber in 1910, who was struck by its strong geometry and modernist sensibility, which was a departure from Stieglitz's early work with its pictorialist aesthetic. Stieglitz (a ruthless editor of his oeuvre at the best of times) destroyed a quantity of the unsold issues of the magazine after publication had ended, and this large-format photogravure is by no means common, especially in the far more limited issue on Japanese tissue.
