New York, Wisconsin,1858-1942 Oak wood four shelf magazine rack with "D" cut out handles. Stickley was a leading spokesperson for the American Craftsman movement, beginning at 12 years old he received his journeyman's license in stonemasonry before receiving a job at his uncle's chair factory. It was there that Stickley discovered his love for wood work, recruiting his brothers Charles and Albert and opening his own workshop. Here, the Craftsman Style was born, keeping with simplistic handmade quality in a time of machine made furniture. By 1888, Stickley left the company he created with his brothers and opened the Gustav Stickley Company where the Craftsman line of furniture was born. He later started his own periodical called "The Craftsmen" and established the Craftsman Home Builders Club which influenced prolific architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
