Few American painters were afforded such complete acceptance into French society as Julius Leblanc Stewart. Nicknamed "the Parisian from Philadelphia", Stewart became an expatriate early in life, when he moved to Paris with his family at age ten. Stewart's artistic education could be described as a remarkable parade of master tutors. Initially trained by Mariano Fortuny and later Eduardo Zamacoïs, he quickly earned a place in the École des Beaux-Arts, and soon rose to become a favored pupil under the direction of another nineteenth century giant, Jean-Léon Gérôme. The son of sugar baron William Hood Stewart, young J.L. was granted unrestrained access to the upper echelons of society in turn-of-the-century France, a class that both inspired and supported his early career. His large-scale group portraits of ton darlings became his calling card, this style emulated in his popular works, The Baptism (1892), On the Yacht, Namoura (1890), and especially The Hunt Ball of 1885, which was accepted into the Salon of that year. Despite his continued success, recessions in the 1890s led to a decrease in general leisure, and Stewart shifted his attentions accordingly, away from the frivolities of the upper class, instead revisiting the tradition of the mythological nude. His earliest iterations feature anonymous figures in pastoral settings, but he transitioned to more recognizable nymphs and goddesses in a bid for another Salon appearance. This single-figure composition is emblematic of that shift. While multi-figure works like his monumental Nymphes chasseresses of 1898 represent the height of his ambition, the present work is more typical of his production during this time. Regardless of scale, the overall sense of idyllic tranquility remains consistent. The nubile young women with luminous porcelain skin stroll through a bucolic wilderness with hair piled atop their heads in precarious knots, resplendent in their health and youth, their rounded, natural bellies unhindered by the restrictive corseting of the era. The models in Stewart's new world of nudes remained the same local Parisiennes, fresh-faced and youthful. Yet, in a significant indication of the constant evolution of beauty standards, the present nymph was at one point overpainted. Prior to her acquisition by the current owner's family, an effort had been made to turn her into more of a mid-century modern woman. Her features were sharpened, slightly advancing her age and pulling her out of early adolescence. Waist-length hair completed her look. However, she has since been professionally restored to her original beauty, regaining the soft, ethereal face and haphazard topknot so recognizable in her peers. HID01801242017

Other Notes: Marie Renard (8 January 1864 - 19 October 1939) was an Austrian operatic mezzo-soprano. Born Marie Pölzl, she first studied voice with Louise Weinlich-Tipka in her native city of Graz and later in Berlin with Rosa de Ruda. She debuted in 1882 in Graz as Azucena in Verdi's Il trovatore, filling in for another singer, and was engaged there until 1884. The following season(1884-1885) she sang at the German Theatre in Prague. After making guest appearances in the title roles of Bizet's Carmen and Ambroise Thomas' Mignon at the Berlin Hofoper in 1885, she became a member of that company from 1885 to 1888 and sang there in the premiere of Heinrich Hofmann's Donna Diana on 15 November 1886. In 1888 she was engaged at the Vienna Hofoper with an annual salary of 16,000 Gulden. She reached the peak of her career and popularity with that company. She was prized above all for her portrayals of roles in French operas (sung in German), in particular as Carmen. In 1889 she sang in Vienna in Carl Maria von Weber's Die drei Pintos (in the version completed by Gustav Mahler). In 1890 she sang the title role in the first Viennese performance of Massenet's Manon. On 1 January1892 she sang Eva in the world premiere of Ritter Pázmán by Johann Strauss II. One of her most memorable performances was as Charlotte in the world premiere of Massenet's Werther on 16 February 1892 (performed in German). She also sang Frau Dot in the world premiere of Goldmark's Das Heimchen am Herd (21 March 1896) and Tatjana in the first Viennese performance of Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin (1897). Other roles in Vienna included Cherubino in Figaros Hochzeit (Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in German), Zerline in Mozart's Don Giovanni, the title roles in Mignon by Thomas and Djamileh by Bizet, Ännchen in Weber's Der Freischütz, Angela in Auber's Le domino noir, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II, Musetta in Puccini's La bohème, and Hänsel in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel. Her farewell performance was in 1900 as Carmen. After her retirement she married Count Rudolf Kinsky. She died in her native city of Graz.

Graham Williford was particularly fond of Belle Epoque portraiture, and one of his favorite artists working in this vein was Julius Leblanc Stewart, a wealthy American expatriate and contemporary of John Singer Sargent, who spent his career in Paris. His father, the sugar millionaire William Hood Stewart, moved the family from Philadelphia to Paris in 1865, and became a distinguished art collector and an early patron of Fortuny and the Barbizon artists. Julius studied under Eduardo Zamacois as a teenager, under Gerome at the École des Beaux Arts, and later was a pupil of Raymondo de Madrazo. Stewart's family wealth enabled him to live a lush expatriate life and paint what he pleased, often large-scale group portraits of society women in their finery. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1878 into the early 20th century, and helped organize the Americans in Paris section of the 1894 Salon. This deftly painted watercolor of a woman reading is a testament to Stewart's skill in capturing light, texture, personality and mood. The way Stewart conveyed the effect of sunlight delicately touching the ruffled edges of the woman's white collar and glinting off the braid threaded through her coiffure is an artful match to her expression of thoughtful reverie.
