UNCOMMON GOVERNMENT DOCUMENT ON ZACHARY TAYLOR VS LEWIS CASS 1848 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN; ONLY THREE ORIGINAL COPIES ON THE INTERNET AT TIME OF LISTING. "This document, by the Representative Andrew Stewart promoting General Zachary Taylor for President Compares the 1848 platforms of the Whigs and Democrats and has much to say about General Taylor and his bid for the presidency. It is found in Sabin (91638). In 1848, the Slavery in question again arose as new territories were populated on their way to statehood. The Whigs who would soon found the Republican Party wanted slavery banned from the new protective states, the Democrats many from the Slaves States wanted slavery extended to counter Northern congressional power to enact protective Tariffs. The struggle between the two sections of the U.S. over tariff protection for industrial development had passed Tariffs in the 1820s, one of which was actually called the "Tariff Of Abominations" in the South. As Northern states began to out number, therefore out vote, the Southern states in Congress. This led to the "Nullification Doctrine" of John C. Calhoun of South Carolina & repeated calls for Secession. This issue of central government authority to pass & enforce laws that one or more states may oppose & the threat to Slavery from Abolitionist sentiment would eventually lead to the horrors of the Civil War. Taylor though a southerner & slave owner himself wanted to preserve the Union & eventually won the nomination." Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) was the 12th President, serving from March 1849 until his death in July 1850. Taylor previously was a career officer in the US Army, rising to the rank of Major General and became a national hero as a result of his victories, against presidential orders, in the Mexican-American War. As a result, he reluctantly won the 1848 election despite his vague political beliefs. His top priority as president was preserving the Union, but he died sixteen months into his term, before making any progress on the status of slavery which had been inflaming tensions in Congress for decades. As president, Taylor kept his distance from Congress and his cabinet, even though partisan tensions threatened to divide the Union. Debate over the status of slavery in the Mexican Cession dominated the political agenda and led to threats of secession from Southerners. Despite being a Southerner and a slaveholder himself, Taylor did not push for the expansion of slavery, and sought sectional harmony above all other concerns. To avoid the issue of slavery, he urged settlers in New Mexico & California to bypass the territorial stage and draft constitutions for statehood, setting the stage for the Compromise of 1850 which delayed the Civil War for a decade." Lewis Cass (1782 -1866) was an American military officer, politician, and statesman. He represented Michigan in the Senate & served in the Cabinets of Presidents Jackson & Buchanan. He was the 1848 Democratic presidential nominee and a leading spokesman for the pro slavery Doctrine of Popular Sovereignty, which held that the white people in each territory should decide whether to permit slavery as a state. Cass's presidential nomination in 1848 precipitated a split in the party, as Cass's advocacy for popular sovereignty alienated the anti-slavery wing of the party.
