Stevenson, Robert Louis Glass plate negative taken in Samoa Showing Robert Louis Stevenson and Tuimaleali'ifano Fa'aoloi'i Si'ua'ana I, paramount chief of Samoa, 21.5 x 16cm, with some writing to the negative and three labels around the margins one reading “Stevenson copy Samoa 17/6/95: 229” This image can be found in Vailima Letters by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1895, opposite p.320.The text on the negative: Stevenson copy Samoa 17/6/95: 229, suggests that this copy of the image was created seven months after Robert Louis Stevenson's death.  It has been suggested that this negative belonged to the New Zealand-born photographer in Apia, Alfred John Tattersall, whom the photographer John Davis took on as an assistant in 1886. The number 229 seems to have been Tattersall's stock number. In April 1895 a large fire destroyed Davis' photographic Gallery and all of Davis' negatives were destroyed. However, for this copy to have been created, the negative must have been stored elsewhere and is therefore one of the few pieces from the Davis collection to have survived.Extensive research suggests that this is the only negative in existence of this image of Robert Louis Stevenson with Chief Tuimaleali'ifano Fa'aoloi'i Si'ua'ana. Notably, it is the last known photograph taken of Robert Louis Stevenson prior to his death.     It would therefore make sense that any copies he had stored elsewhere would then become the only negative in existence after the fire destroyed the original negative(s).

STEVENSON ROBERT LOUIS: (1850-1894) 'I am damned miserable now sometimes, and have a struggle to keep from liquor and opium'

          Est: €10,000 - €12,000

STEVENSON ROBERT LOUIS: (1850-1894) 'I am damned miserable now sometimes, and have a struggle to keep from liquor and opium' STEVENSON ROBERT LOUIS: (1850-1894) Scottish novelist of Treasure Island (1883), Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) and Kidnapped (1886). An extraordinary A.L.S., Robert Louis Stevenson, four pages, 8vo, n.p. (Edinburgh), n.d. (Autumn 1873), to his cousin Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson ('My dear Bob'), on Stevenson's monogrammed stationery. The twenty-three year old Stevenson writes with a certain amount of humour in his letter, although signs of a personal crisis (both financial and mental) pervade through the content, in part, 'I have written to no one for about a month. I can't come to Paris just now, owing to my being so bloody uncoiny......I had to sponge on fellows for tobacco. Wasn't that death for a rising literary gent? I have not been able to write either; just such hell, in spirits, health &c. This drunken city exerts its strange prerogative; and I do something sacrifice to the God of the coloured bottles. However I am going to be good (I have not been very bad, you know, only I don't like the game at all); and in the meantime I've got enough coin scraped together to go to London for three days (where I shall see Katharine [Bob's sister]) and then land myself in the character of a mendicant at Cambridge where I shall be fed and clothed for a week at Trin[ity] Coll[ege]....As for Paris, I suppose it will be Spring before I can manage that; but then I shall come for some time and make a good holiday of it. I shall take this letter out with me and part with it when I have found out the date for Academy pictures......I say, old man, Edinburgh is a very sanguinary shop, and bloodier than ever, you should be glad you are out of it'. Beneath his signature Stevenson playfully observes 'Writing as large as this is such damned fun - I can't stop though I have nothing to say' and further adds a postscript, signed with his initials RLS, which fills the entire fourth page, in part, 'I am trying stories and all sorts of things, with no success. I am an incompetent bugger, I shall write soon, when I am in a holier, happier, better state of mind and body.......I am damned miserable now sometimes, and have a struggle to keep from liquor and opium and things of that sort. I wish to God you were here. I am going south tomorrow so the worst is over; the change will put me up again......' A rare letter of exceptional content. Some very light age wear and a few minor stains to the edges, otherwise VG Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson (1847-1900) Scottish art critic, a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson. After studying at the Edinburgh School of Art Stevenson moved to Paris in 1873 where he continued his studies under Carolus Duran. Katharine de Mattos (1851-1939) Scottish author and journalist, sister of Robert Alan Mowbray Stevenson and a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson. Robert Louis Stevenson and his cousin Bob enjoyed a close friendship, leading Bohemian lifestyles in Edinburgh and becoming members of the LJR (Liberty, Justice, Reverenvce) Club whose constitution began with the statement 'Disregard everything our parents have taught us'. Stevenson would visit his cousin in Paris in April 1874.

I have called on you already this morning; I shall call again after four this afternoon; and should I be again unfortunate, I should be glad to hear from you when you will be in the house, or where else I can conveniently speak with you alone. I am, Sir, your obedient servant'. Some light staining and wear to the folds (professionally and neatly repaired) only very slightly affecting a few words of text, but not the signature. G Stevenson's correspondent is most likely to have been Walter Launt Palmer (1854-1932) American Impressionist Painter. Palmer was in Paris in 1876-77 where he was studying with Carolus-Duran and encountered the artist colony of Grez-sur-Loing with Stevenson. The Scottish novelist was in Paris in early 1877 with his future wife, Fanny Osbourne, and spent much of the following year in the company of his lover and her two children.

– Innengelenke angeplatzt.

Stevenson’ and, once, ‘Robert Louis Stevenson (Tusitala)’) and one autograph letter unsigned, to Anne Jenkin, various places (Skerryvore, Bournemouth; Tahiti; Honolulu; Vailima, most often n.p.), [June 1885-May 1892: most often n.d.], approx. 77 pages in total, various sizes (150 x 100mm - 320 x 200mm), often on paper extracted from ruled notebooks. [With:] an autograph manuscript entitled ‘The Day after Tomorrow’, a critique of English politics, 5 pages, small 4to (200 x 160mm), (unfnished); one photograph signed of Robert Louis Stevenson; two telegrams; 15 letters from Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne Stevenson, two on letters from Stevenson; two letters from Lloyd Stevenson; one letter from Austin Strong; and two photographs of Fleeming Jenkin. 58 items in total. Provenance: by descent from Anne Jenkin. ‘call me louis, as he has noW done For so many years’. Many of the early letters from Robert Louis Stevenson to Anne, widow of Fleeming Jenkin (1833-1885), engineer and academic, Stevenson’s professor and friend, revolve around the memoir of Fleeming’s life that Stevenson agreed to write É on which he began professing ‘it will give me the greatest pleasure to do all that I can for the volume in every way’, but was remarking on nearing its completion in 1887 ‘I do not believe I would accept a similar task again’. Persistent writer’s block (‘My mind is quite arrested like a watch’; ‘Chapter VI is no joke; it is a mare magnum; I swim and drown and come up again’) is exacerbated by frequent bouts of illness (‘I may add to all this that my health is usually worst when my mind is in working order’), and a generally positive reception on its publication nevertheless gives him occasion to bemoan ‘the weakness of the reviewer, poor soul! and how he longs to fnd fault t the poor, small creature casting on all sides to fnd some opportunity t when he is a little older (if he be still young) he will be ashamed of himself’, as well as ‘the light-headed vanity of readers and the sublime indifference of printers’. He reveals much of himself in the questions and hypotheses he puts to Anne Jenkin (‘1st When did Fleeming frst see you? 2nd was he immediately in love?’), as well as the wide-ranging thoughts he shares with his friend along the way; on hearing that Anne has suffered an ailment, he writes ‘there is nothing (bar dishonour) that I fear so much as pain; but yet it acts as a pitch-pipe and reminds us of the key of life ... if we had only faith like a grain of mustard seed, it is the best that any of us could do at any time: I mean of our conscious doings, but the best of us is unconscious and not us’; in response to Anne’s suggestion that he might act in conjunction with others to combat political injustice in Ireland rather than struggling alone he notes that ‘I have never dared to say what I feel about men’s lives, because my own was in the wrong; shall I dare to send them to death? The physician must heal himself; he must honestly try the path he recommends; if he does not even try, should he not be silent?’. Throughout the letters appear references to the important events in the lives of Louis’ and Anne’s respective families: at her questioning her son, Austen’s, choice of fancée, he counsels her (noting that ‘my marriage was largely in the teeth of what my parents wanted; they were deeply hurt t And now, as I look back, I think it was the best move I ever made in my life. Not only would I do it again; I cannot conceive the idea of not doing it’) and we fnd a damning indictment of W.E. Henley when Stevenson breaks off relations with his erstwhile friend. The later letters are full of Stevenson’s engaging descriptions of his life on the Samoan island of Vailima, much of this focused on the diffculties of running effciently ‘this great household of seven whites’, with discussions also of his local friends and responsibilities as Tusitala (‘write-tale’) including court sessions where RLS must ‘judge my causes and discriminate between many different shades of falsehood’. Island life obviously allowed much time for refection; in one of these long letters, Stevenson takes a longer view on the process of ageing: ‘I have been working very hard this last quarter of a year É the last of my fortieth, it seems ; and I am not sorry: it is a long fght this life, not much of it victory, cares come about us É I was going to say as we grow old É it is not so É they come about us as we let themt’. Taken together, this collection offers an insight not just into the writing process of Robert Louis Stevenson, but into his interior life. The letters from his wife, Fanny, complement his and add detail, but the most striking example is the letter she writes to Anne the day after her husband’s death, giving her often overlooked account of his collapse É as he steadily dropped oil into a mayonnaise they were making for supper É and funeral on Vailima. Published in E. Mehew and B. Booth, Letters, vols. V-VII. Robert Louis Stevenson was a frequent visitor to the house that Anne Jenkin (d. 1921) shared with her husband, Fleeming: the latter had frst come to know Louis as one of his engineering students, and they later became friends; Stevenson had been an enthusiastic performer in the amateur dramatic productions put on by the Jenkins in their Edinburgh home.
