One of the women holds the cloth and looks at the man sitting through the window to l. smoking a pipe, his left hand in his pocket. Inscribed below the depiction "Painted by D. Wilkie, R.A. Principal Painter in ordinary to his Majesty / Engraved by James Stewart." below title, dedication and publication line: "The Pedlar / From the original picture painted for the late Matthew Baillie / And now in the possession of Mrs. Baillie, to whom this engraving is respectfully dedicated by her very obliged serv. David Wilkie", "London published 1834 , by Moon, Boys & Graves, printsellers to the king.", Printed by Lloyd & Hennings", signed "Wilkie" below the window in the image on the left.       Attributed to Sir John James Steuart of Allanbank,  Scottish 1779-1849-  Soldiers on horseback;  pencil, pen, brown ink and watercolour on paper, 11.8 x 13.5 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present work bears a striking similarity to a sketch by Steuart, also depicting a figure, seemingly in historical costume, mounted on horseback, apparently in the midst of battle, which sold at Christie's, London, on 21 November 2019 (lot 12), as part of the Ross Collection From Knockmore, Enniskerry, Wicklow.
