    13 ¾" x 10 ¾" gelatin silver print, dry mounted on board, vintage 1950. In a letter to Sternberger Einstein wrote: "The portraits you have made of me are true masterpieces of the photographic art. It seems quite amazing to me that you could present this subject so appetizingly." (Quoted in the Sternberger catalog mentioned above.)

    14" x 11" vintage gelatin silver print, 1952. Sternberger made portraits of Frida Kahlo and Rivera in Mexico City in 1952. Another portrait from this sitting is in "Photographic Portraits.... " Here Rivera imitates the expression of a fierce Mexican mask. In the catalog of the Museo Frida Kahlo Sternberger is said to have "captured Diego's face in humorous and spontaneous gestures."

    Rich brown 9 ¾" x 7 7/8" gelatin silver print, 1939. A slight variant is in "Photographic Portraits of Marcel Sternberger," San Francisco, 1986. Born in Hungary, Sternberger had an important career as a portrait photographer in Europe and then the US. In the 1950's he taught a course at NYU called "Psychology and Techniques of Portrait Photography."
