Edition originale limitée à 300 exemplaires, celui-ci bien complet de la totalité de ses lithographies et des pages de texte. Ouvrage pionnier de la redécouverte et de l'intérêt porté par l'Occident à la civilisation Maya, Views of Ancient Monuments in central America, Chiapas and Yucatan fait suite aux expéditions de John Lloyd Stephens dans le sud du Mexique. L'architecte britannique Frederick Catherwood l'y accompagne à deux reprises, en 1839 et 1841. Ils tiennent un véritable journal de bord, chacun à leur façon, Stephens par les mots et Catherwood par le dessin, décrivant, relevant et documentant chaque vestige qu'ils rencontrent durant ces deux voyages. L'utilisation d'une chambre claire permet à Catherwood de reproduire reliefs et ornements avec une précision remarquable. Pour l'artiste, cette acuité du trait va de pair avec un goût certain pour le pittoresque: il n'est pas rare que ses compositions présentent quelques ajouts et écarts avec la réalité, licence destinée à renforcer l'atmosphère des planches. Au moment de sa parution, l'ouvrage reçoit les sufrages du public et les 300 exemplaires trouvent tous preneur. La critique ne tarit pas d'éloges et le livre restera pendant un demi-siècle la principale référence iconographique pour l'étude de la civilisation Maya. Von Hagen, Search for the Mayas.
