JUVENILIA: ILLUSTRATED NURSERY RHYMES. STEPHENS, HENRY LOUIS. 1824-1882. Nursery Rhymes. New York: Julius Bien, for Hurd and Houghton, 1864-1865. 6 volumes, folio (327 x 270 mm). 6 lithographed title pages, 86 lithographic illustrations. Publisher's brown cloth, pictorially stamped in gilt with circular vignettes on covers, all edges gilt. Light rubbing to extremities, scattered foxing, a few fingermarks. LIMITED DELUXE EDITION, one of 100 'proof impressions' printed for subscribers, with grey tinted lithographs mounted on card leaves. Stephens, a prolific satirist and caricaturist, illustrates familiar nursery rhymes with anthropomorphic characters depicted in the dress of contemporary people, some of them caricatures of people you might find in New York: the rat in The House that Jack Built sporting a top hat, and the dog a policeman on Broadway. It was later printed in a 'standard' 2-volume format. Mahoney-Latimer-Folmsbee, p 440 (2-volume edition). Rare to find complete: Sinclair Hamilton ( Early American Book Illustrators and Wood Engravers) lists only one proof copy.
