      Stephens, Charles H. (American, 1855-1931) Oil Painting - Moraine Lake - Oil on canvas. Signed lower right Charles H Stephens. In good condition. There are only certain times of the year during the summer when the Moraine Lake in Canada is this vibrant blue color. Measures 25 inches x 30 inches. Frame measures 35 inches x 40 inches. Adapted from wikipedia: Charles H. Stephens is the husband of Alice Barber Stephens, the American painter and engraver who was known for her illustrations. Charles H. Stephens was an instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts and a painter of Native American subjects. He had lived among the Blackfeet tribe and had an extensive collection of artifacts. Charles and Alice met when Alice was a student at PAFA and the couple married in 1890. They had one son, D. Owens Stephens, who followed family tradition by become an artist as well. The Stephenses commissioned architect Will Page to convert a stone barn in the utopian community of Rose Valley, PA into ?Thunderbird Lodge? in 1904. It was a large home that contained studios for both Charles and Alice is where they lived and painted until their deaths.
