Micius Stephane was born in 1912 in the small coastal village of Bainet. He began painting in his spare time while working as a shoemaker. Following the establishment of the Centre d'Art, Stephane moved to Port-au-Prince to devote himself exclusively to painting. His early depictions of market places and village life are robust and naive, dominated by earth tones. Over the years Stephane gradually included more vivid colors in his compositions; however, his naive, childlike vision remained essentially unchanged. Stephane's work is included in the permanent collection of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Detroit Institute of Art. Micius Stephane (Haitian/Bainet, 1912-1996) Village Market, circa 1960's, Oil on masonite, 17 x 25 1/4 in. Unframed Provenance: Evelyn and Leon Chalom Lot Essay: A cobbler who would sculpt, Micius Stéphane encountered Dewitt Peters in 1946, subsequently joining the Centre d’Art. He painted country scenes and mythical depictions, always with a meticulously chosen palette. In the 1960s and 70s he traveled in Europe and was included in group exhibitions, most notably one organized by the poet and cultural critic André Malraux.
