Each work begins and ends in much the same way; a mix of wonder, joy, hesitation and terror. The process is always different. Works may begin with gesture drawings, scribbles, a color wash, removing, replacing. Finding an image in the chaos is the magic in the studio. I reject consistency as a means of identity. There’s no freedom in copying myself or painting the same argument over and over again. Isms, style, aesthetics are of little concern. If these are evident in my work, it is not an intent, but a result of time spent in the studio. I have gone through periods of “creative silence”, some long, some short. I’ve found this to be beneficial. The artist’s attitude, approach and perception transfers into all endeavors: painting, music, gardening, cooking, etc. You get the picture.
