            Est: €400 - €500

EDUARD STELLMACHER ( 1868- 1945) for AMPHORA. Enameled porcelain. It presents faults and restorations. It has marks on the base. Measurements: 45 x 27 x 18 cm. The Amphora factory was located in Turn-Teplitz, Austria (now in the Czech Republic). Teplitz, once a spa town that attracted the likes of Goethe and Beethoven, had lost its luster over time due to the increasing intrusion of industrial activity. Turn, which had served Teplitz spa lovers with amusements that included lush gardens and beautiful villas, was also affected by gradual industrialization. In the mid-19th century, the area formed a de facto pottery production center that was also home to Kunstkeramik Paul Dachsel, Eduard Stellmacher and Ernst Wahliss. Porcelain factories found the region advantageous because the local riverbeds provided an abundant supply of kaolin, an essential ingredient in porcelain. The rivers themselves were sources of energy, and nearby railroads facilitated the rapid sale and export of ceramics throughout Europe. When originally incorporated, Amphora mimicked the Orientalist and Neo-Baroque styles favored by Alfred Stellmacher. The combined talents of skilled designers such as Eduard Stellmacher, Paul Dachsel and a host of decorators from the Teplitz Special School of Ceramics enabled the Amphora manufactory to quickly develop a unique genre of Art Nouveau ceramics. What unified their production was an unparalleled concern for fine design and high quality, as well as Alfred Stellmacher's use of "ivory porcelain," a yellowish matte material that was malleable, but resistant to high temperatures. Amphora's stylistic diversity, combined with its unwavering standard of quality, made it a world leader among industrial manufacturers of artistic ceramics. A major series of a remarkable decade, from 1894 to 1904, features plants (including applied flowers and fruits), animals, mythical creatures, Klimt and Mucha-style portraits, biomorphic designs, and simulated jewelry. The departure of Paul Dachsel in 1903 and Eduard Stellmacher in 1904 marked the end of Amphora's golden age.

Rare Eduard Stellmacher Amphora Dragon Vase

            Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Large Art Nouveau Eduard Stellmacher (German 1868-1945) Amphora Dragon (Pterodactyls) Vase. Turn Teplitz Bohemia, RStK (Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel), numbered #2059, 48. With crown, Austria and Amphora mark. Depicting very finely detailed dragons (Pterodactyls) handles (17 3/4" high), ivory colored background; realistic spider webs, two birds on bush attacking a spider. Also a beautiful gilt painted sun in the background. Measures approx. - 21" high x 12" wide x 9" deep. Dragons, monsters and dinosaurs were the central subject at the Paris World Exhibition 1900 in Paris for Amphora, which are nowadays among the most stunning, desired and expensive objects by the company. In August 1904, Eduard Stellmacher left Amphora to start his own porcelain factory. Along with businessman Karl Frank, Eduard opened Ed. Stellmacher & Co. in 1905 in Turn-Teplitz. Many designs in 1905 were large vases with applied, finely detailed amphibians, birds, dragons, and insects. Stellmacher’s development of hard earthenware preserved the details during firing. Some vases had highly colored glazes and luster that he had not previously used in his work with Amphora.
